The city is increasingly on the international radar for its gastronomy. The British magazine Condé Nast Traveller published a list of 12 restaurants not to be missed in Porto.
Noting that “Porto is fast becoming a must-do city break”, the article’s author, Abigail Malbon, points out a possible explanation for this attraction power: “its many restaurants and food traditions.”
“Portugal’s second city might be known first and foremost for its port wine, but there’s an emerging foodie scene to rival even Lisbon’s restaurants as the city develops and welcomes more visitors each year”, adds the author.
There are must-try restaurants, admits Abigail Malbon: “Visitors will likely want to try the francesinha, which certainly shouldn’t be missed, but is best saved for a ravenous moment.”
Thus, the author prepared a list of 12 suggestions that includes “from Michelin-starred menus to relaxed, wine-focused dining”.
“In no particular order”, Abigail Malbon has chosen 12 restaurants and justifies each choice: Euskalduna Studio (chic eats); Época Porto (brunch); Gruta (fish and shellfish); Tia Tia (natural wines); Restaurante Dona Maria (cosy atmosphere); Casario (incredible views); O Buraco (eating with the locals); Café Santiago (francesinha sandwiches); Chez Maurice (beachside dining); Blind (tasting menu); The Yeatman Gastronomic Restaurant (fine dining); and Enoteca 17.56 (wine tasting).
Porto is increasingly on the international radar, having received the award of World’s Leading City Destination at the World Travel Awards 2022. The North American magazine Forbes chose the city as one of the 50 must-visit places for 2023.
