Opened since 1909 and better known as "Piolho" (louse), this is one of the most charismatic and oldest cafes in the city. It is mainly frequented by students.
Today it's one of the landmarks in Porto, not only for its history (which can be learned through the messages students post on the walls) but also for its gatherings.
Day 1
Piolho
Padaria Ribeiro
The history of this bakery began to be written in 1878. Its founders imprinted the establishment with the tradition and quality of its products - identity characteristics that their successors have been able to preserve and keep alive to this day. There is no one from Porto who has never heard of this house and its famous products.
Armazéns Cunhas
There is uncertainty about the start of activity of this Armazéns (department store), but it is likely that it began its activity between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The store is easily recognized for the proud peacock's ostentation on the building's Art-Deco façade - a staple of this historic commercial establishment.
Lopo Xavier
Company founded in 1934, sells Portuguese raw material and wool. In recent years, it has been providing consulting services of Knitting, Crochet and Embroidery. This shop is an integral part of the city's history and is visited by many customers from the third or fourth generation of families loyal to this commercial house.
Lemos Pharmacy
It is one of the emblematic spaces of the city that, over time, has been providing a very useful service to the population. Founded in 1780 by the Frades Carmelitas do Carmo (Carmelite Friars), this pharmacy was famous for the work carried out at a scientific research level and for the products sold there. It has a museum with a rich decades-old collection.
Botónia
The first business records of this house specialising in the trade of buttons and haberdashery date from 1936. However, some people associate it with the birth date of filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira in 1908. This shop is filled with hundreds of boxes with numerous buttons. Due to the diversity and richness of its offer, it is here that many fashion designers come to buy their supplies.
Livraria Académica
A century-old bookshop and a key cultural reference of Porto. Many illustrious figures of literature like Miguel Torga or José Régio came here. Founded on 16 November 1912, it continues its original mission - to dignify the book and place it where it is entitled, preserving the passion for book activity.
Casa dos Forros
The Casa dos Forros is closed in order to prevent the Covid-19 outbreak.
Located in the heart of the city of Porto and in the pedestrian area of Rua de Cedofeita, the "Casa dos Forros" haberdashery has remained in the same family since 1958. This establishment combines tradition and modernity. Since the 1980s it stands out for the carefully planned and executed shop windows displays.
Confeitaria Petúlia
Since 1972 Petúlia has been a leading patisserie in the city. One of its specialties is the bolo-rei made year-round, whose fame results in a significant increase in customers during the Christmas season. In addition to bring a patisserie, this establishment sells other products such as cheese, cold cuts, chocolates and wines. The space was renovated in 2014 to preserve its identity.
José Rosas
Founded in 1851, this establishment is one of Porto's oldest jewellery shop. Still in the nineteenth century, there is its modernization with the entry of partner José Rosas, who institutes personalised customer service by the first woman jeweller. Its history includes the restoration of the Portuguese Crown Jewels and the application of filigree in crystal and ceramic pieces. With over 150 years of accumulated experience, the shop is already in its fifth generation.
Visits on Saturdays by booking.
Café Moreira
