The Coliseu Porto Ageas has presented its programme for this year, highlighting, right away, the debut in Portugal of one of the best contemporary circus companies in the world – Les 7 Doigts de la Main, with "Passagers". Until December, around 150 shows are expected, including concerts of all genres, dance, theatre, opera, dance, comedy, children's and youth shows, and, of course, the Christmas Circus.
Among the main highlights, the programme also includes an opera by Philip Glass, the return of the Companhia Nacional de Ballet and musical tours. The Coliseu's own programme will focus on Portuguese lyrical and symphony productions, several of which for the first time ever, taking advantage of the unique features of the main hall and the tradition and experience gained in 81 years of history. There are 13 different performances, from classical to contemporary, and including different artistic disciplines: staged opera, symphony and choral-symphony concerts, ballets with live music, lyrical musical theatre and electroacoustic opera and even an opera festival.
As for dance, the Coliseu includes performances with symphony music played live. Of particular note is the return of Companhia Nacional de Bailado (CNB), with two large-scale projects that showcase the company’s classical and contemporary facets, and always with live music. On June 16th, the programme brings together two choreographers who, with different approaches, present works on the symbiotic relationship between dance and music: Miguel Ramalho’s "Symphony of Sorrows", with music by Henryk Górecki, and Mauro Bigonzetti’s "Cantata", a piece that had its world premiere in Lisbon, in 2001, at the Ballet Gulbenkian. On October 13th, CNB presents August Bournonville’s "La Sylphide", on the stage of the Coliseu, considered to be the first romantic ballet in the history of dance.
There are also Concertos Promenade and, of course, the circus
In classical music, there are two very different shows: on March 17th, the maestro António Victorino d’Almeida returns to the Coliseu to, together with Mário Laginha, present “Improvisação a dois Pianos”; on May 12th, Europe Day, the Orquestra Filarmónica de Portugal, conducted by maestro Osvaldo Ferreira, premieres the concert "Mitos da Europa".
In musical theatre, the Coliseu presents “The Cradle Will Rock” by Marc Blitzstein, the contemporary composer from Brecht and one of the main musical pieces of political theatre written in the United States.
Continuing with the tradition, and with kids and families in mind, the Concertos Promenade 2.0 cycle returns. With the artistic direction of maestro Cesário Costa, the new cycle will include iconic works such as “The Four Seasons” by Vivaldi or “Mother Goose” by Maurice Ravel. One Sunday a month (beginning on February 19th), in a relaxed atmosphere, kids and adults alike are invited to enter the atmosphere of the works and discover all the fun facts, with commentaries by musicologist Jorge Castro Ribeiro and multimedia design by Sara Botelho.
A discipline that is part of the Coliseu's genesis and where it is increasingly innovative, the circus stands out with the Portuguese debut of the contemporary circus company Les 7 Doigts de la Main, on February 11th, with the show "Passagers" and, later in the year, the traditional Circo de Natal.
In addition to its own programme, will also be performing at the Coliseu, and already confirmed, Xutos e Pontapés, Jorge Palma, Aurea, Valete, Pedro Abrunhosa and Canto Nono, with a tribute to José Mário Branco, as well as The Waterboys, Meute, Martinho da Vila, Orochi, Ana Carolina and Emicida, and more.
