About

This granite statue with a bronze spear, representing a warrior with the city's shield, by João Joaquim Alves de Sousa Alão, is from the beginning of the 19th century and was carved to surmount the Porto City Hall's pediment which was located in Praça Nova (current Praça da Liberdade), where it stood until 1915. From 2001 to 2013, the statue was an element making part of the "memorial recalling long years of life and history of the city of Porto" ,a project of the architect Fernando Távora, dated from 2001 and built upon the ruins of the former Town Hall building, from the sixteenth century . In 2013 the statue returned to Praça da Liberdade, having been placed in front of the facade of the building of the Bank of Portugal.
