About

“Praia do Castelo do Queijo”, located in the city of Porto, is a city beach. Its landscape is dominated by rocky outcrops that surround the beach and its visitors. The curious name of this beach is due to the fact that it is located next to the Fort of São Francisco Xavier do Queijo, an old defensive fortification built in the 15th century. The small and massive fort, with an arched entrance and topped by the Portuguese coat of arms, is popularly called “Castelo do Queijo”. According to tradition, on the site where it was built there was a huge stone with a rounded shape, similar to a cheese.
