The building was designed and planned, from the start, to operate as a maternity hospital, a position which it has held without interruption since its opening (September 1939) until the present day.
The Maternity hospital is a specialised central hospital, included in the Portuguese network of hospitals belonging to the Portuguese National Health System, and provides care in the area of health for women and children.
