Romantic Extension
Museums & Thematic Centres
About
The "Extensão do Romantismo" is housed at Quinta da Macieirinha, or also known as Quinta do Sacramento, an old 18th-century country house that belonged to the Pinto Basto family. The building opened as a museum hub in 1972, with the aim of showing the atmosphere of a 19th-century bourgeois house, a characteristic period in Porto.
Currently, station 4 of "Museu da Cidade" focuses its narrative on the king of Piedmont and Sardinia, Carlos Alberto (Charles Albert), who was exiled here and where he spent his last days. In memory of the former king, some of the house's rooms were recreated, such as the chapel, the bedchamber and the living room, based on the watercolours and lithographs from that time.
During the book fair, admission to the Romantic Extension is free.
