About

“Estado Desunidos da América” [Disunited States of America], a critical look by João Porfírio (photojournalist) and João de Almeida Dias (reporter) during the 2020 presidential elections.

The two were, from 24 October to 7 November 2020, covering the presidential campaign in the US, for the online daily newspaper Observador. The exhibition, curated by Maria Mann, is “a record of a country that is politically engaged but severely hamstrung”, stresses Casa da Imprensa, the organiser.

During the 16 days, João Porfírio and João de Almeida Dias (now a diplomat) travelled more than 2600 kilometres, passing through four North American states: New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio. Together they made 16 reports. “We couldn't find anyone willing to sit on the fence. We heard from those who put Trump alongside the worst of the fascists and also those who equated Biden with communist dictators. We also met those who had stopped talking to friends or family because they couldn't tolerate their political opinions”, emphasises João de Almeida Dias, quoted by the organiser.
“João Porfírio and João de Almeida Dias have captured the very heart of today's America in eloquent and evocative documentation. Their photos and words place us directly at the centre of a disunited America”, stresses the exhibition's curator.
