About

On 9 May, Europe Day, the conductor António Victorino d'Almeida presents an ambitious work that celebrates the union in the European space. "Gaudeamus - Alegria para a Europa" is a cycle of 30 original songs sung by the Porto soprano Ana Maria Pinto and played by a 14-piece chamber orchestra, with two particular features: the first is the composition of a new and special song for Ukraine; the second is that each song is a poem from each of the 27 countries of the European Union, plus England, adding the Gaelic language (Ireland) and the Flemish dialect (Belgium). A poem by Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen was chosen for the song in Portuguese.

At 80 years of age – the same age as the Coliseu – one of the most prestigious Portuguese composers still in activity, presents us with a show that represents a much-needed fraternal embrace of love for all the peoples and cultures that make up the European Union, at a time when war is once again a main theme.

Under the theme “joy”, this is a concert that goes beyond the concept of musical work since it brings together poetry and music, but also a philosophical-ideological concept of a united Europe in values and ideals, reaffirming, stressing, praising and valuing the cultural, social and sociological differences of the peoples and nations that represent Europe.
