About

Returning to stories of love and affection, Joana Providência now wishes to reflect upon what binds and builds a family. The performance Famílias imaginárias (Imaginary Families) seeks to, throughout 2020/2021, closely work with a group of families from Porto, exploring the ties that binds them, but also creating new relationships based on proximity and care. A family is made of different ties and knots, which get entangled in different ways, producing fabrics in every shape and size. Famílias imaginárias will enable us not only to look at established families, but also to form new ones: we can borrow a grandmother from the group or try out siblings on stage. Uncles, fathers, mothers, grandparents, cousins, etc.: all the ties that we can imagine can be made up in this project. For Famílias imaginárias, Joana Providência has also invited families that include performing arts professionals, who will work continuously with the community, weaving together the web of stories and memories that will result in this performance, which is performed, and experienced by everyone as a strange family that is made up during the process.
