Writer, actor and stage director Pedro Gil has a very personal way of looking at the great theatre of the world. “I think I can only do comedy; I think that everything is comedy. Comedy in the sense that life is a failure at which I can only laugh.” “O Inesquecível Professor” [The Unforgettable Teacher] is the play that follows “Don Juan Esfaqueado na Avenida da Liberdade”, where his libertine escapes the flames of biblical Hell to fall into 2018 Portugal, a different sort of Hell, possibly cooler but decidedly funnier. “O Inesquecível Professor”, we warn you in advance, begins on a sad note. A theatre teacher on the brink of retirement no longer feels the joy of the first day of class. He sees this unprecedented event as the confirmation of his defeat: the theatre he has upheld and taught to his students has failed to materialise. But the worst is yet to come: he convinces himself that the only way to keep his final-year students from ending up like himself is to do everything within his power to save them from a life in the theatre… “O Inesquecível Professor”, as we all have realised by now, is a comedy, that place for deriding and celebrating humanity.
