About

It is a new chapter that opens in the already long history of Teatro da Palmilha Dentada, but perhaps it is advisable to moderate expectations. The company from Porto makes an unprecedented foray into the classical repertoire, putting the name of an author from the western theatre on an artistic programme for the first time. But, here is an advance warning, this Bourgeois Gentleman is not “by” but “based upon” Molière, a means that indicates a source and denounces an appropriation. Ricardo Alves and his troupe revisit this classic from 1670, an extravagant and colourful comedy-ballet written in collaboration with the composer Lully, mixing dances and songs. Territory that is not even new on the route of Palmilha Dentada, just think of A Cidade dos Que Partem (2009), also a comedy of customs disguised as a musical, or vice versa. A portrait of all-devouring ambition and all-purchasing nouveaux riches, O Burguês Fidalgo continues to speak about us and our cities, in short: about our ugliness. Topic that is centuries old of contemporary and future.
