About

Shostakovich wrote his eighth string quartet in Dresden in 1960, inspired by the ruins of the bombed city. It is an emotional piece, thought of as a kind of farewell that brings together quotes from many other works by the composer, combined in a genius way. Written just over half a century before, Ravel's only quartet completes this recital by Quarteto de Cordas de Matosinhos. Controversial at the time it was written, badly received by the critics but admired by figures like Debussy, the piece was quickly included in the repertoire of the great quartets and became one of the most performed of the 20th century.
