Richard Strauss is the quintessential symphonic poet, the composer who reached the highest exponent of refinement in this genre. A hero’s life is his eighth symphonic poem and it was a great success when it premiered, in 1899. The following testimony resulted from one of its performances, “I see people trembling and almost rise in certain passages. In the end, while the audience is applauding and the flowers are brought to the stage, there is the sound of the trumpets and the women wave their handkerchiefs.” The piece is a self-portrait of the composer and revisits famous themes from his oeuvre, taken from symphonic poems and songs. With the comments of Mário Azevedo and with the excerpts played by the orchestra, we will understand a bit more how Richard Strauss portrayed himself through this fabulous music.
