About

How do the images in a book come to life on stage? The Firefly Inviter began by existing in the words of Angolan writer Ondjaki and in the drawings of illustrator, cartoonist and visual performer António Jorge Gonçalves. Together, they had already offered us the book “Uma Escuridão Bonita” (A Pretty Darkness), a title that echoed in “O Convidador de Pirilampos”, a story, too, “with no electric light,” close to the mysteries of nature and humanity, light and night, fear and awe. Now, and on a stage near us, we will see and hear a little boy who enjoyed walking in the Great Forest, "even when it was near-dark." He is a very curious little boy who likes “scientifying” things, a verb that describes what scientists and inventors and children do: they “scientify” things, animals, the whole world. This boy invented, for example, a "path enlarger" and a "firefighter inviter". And in the process, he'll learn how to be friends of the darkness. Directed by António Jorge Gonçalves, who also draws live, this show is narrated by actress Cláudia Semedo, accompanied by clarinettist José Conde and the overhead-projected images of Paula Delecave. A dream dreamed in words, pictures and sounds, on a stage covered by a scary and pretty darkness.
