Joan Miró - Signos e Figuração

Until 02/10/2022

12 €

The Miró Collection, owned by the Portuguese State, on loan to the Municipality of Porto and deposited at the Serralves Foundation, comprises 85 artworks and includes paintings, sculptures, collages, drawings and tapestries by the renowned Catalan artist. The Collection spans six decades of Joan Miró's work, from 1924 to 1981, thus being an excellent introduction to his work and his main artistic concerns. The exhibition follows on from the conclusion of the works of the Serralves Villa’s restoration and adaptation project, by the architect Álvaro Siza, who had the support of the Porto City Council, under the terms of the protocol that defines the conditions for depositing the Miró Collection in Serralves. Joan Miró (1893-1983), one of the great “form-givers” of the 20th century, was simultaneously an aesthetic “assassin” who challenged the traditional limits of the medium in which he worked. In his art, the different practices dialogue with each other, crossing the mediums: painting communicates with drawing; sculpture seduces woven objects; and collages, always conjugations of disparate entities, function as a major principle or matrix for exploring the depths of reality. This exhibition does not follow a chronological or linear format: the works are thematically aggregated, trying to give a holistic view of the artist's career. The various rooms address different aspects of his art: the development of a sign language; the artist's encounter with abstract painting that was done in Europe and America; his interest in the process and the expressive gesture; its complex responses to the social drama of the 1930s; the innovative approach to collage; the impact of Southwest Asian aesthetics on his drawing practice; and, above all, his incessant curiosity about the nature of materials.

Metamorfoses: Imanência Vegetal, Mineral e Animal no Espaço Doméstico Romântico

This exhibition also marks the beginning of the evocation of the centenary of the death of Porto artist, Aurélia de Souza, a key moment of the 2022/2023 programme. The celebrated self-portrait of the artist as “Santo António” (Saint Anthony), made around 1902, will be part of the new collection that brings together paintings, furniture, tapestries and textiles, ceramics, crockery and silverware, as well as other surprising sections of the collection, such as sets of fans, cut-out papers and malacology.

Rivane Neuenschwander: Wild Seeds

Until 09/04/2023

12 €

This exhibition, the artist's first solo show in Portugal, is centred around her most recent film – “Eu sou uma arara” [I am a macaw] (2022) – which will have its first ever premiere in Serralves. Made in collaboration with filmmaker Mariana Lacerda, this medium-length film is a critical reflection on the impact of deforestation in the Amazon upon its indigenous peoples at a time of political and social tension. This work is also the result of a long period of research and a series of actions in São Paulo where dozens of figures inspired by Brazilian fauna and flora were paraded through the city's streets, like a dense and powerful forest. Heir to the historical legacy of the post-war avant-garde movements, from neo-concrete to tropicália, Rivane Neuenschwander (b. 1967) is one of the most renowned names in Brazilian contemporary art. In her work, the artist combines different media and mediums to build a unique visual repertoire that explores narratives on a wide range of themes, including language and time, popular culture and literature, psychoanalysis and art, nature and society, politics and philosophy, fear and desire. One of her most iconic works, “Eu desejo o seu desejo” [I wish your wish] (2003), a collection of wishes reminiscent of the wish ribbons/bracelets of Senhor do Bonfim, will be placed in the Chapel of Serralves Villa.

Ajax Et Plures

Until 01/11/2022

“Ajax et plures” presents a set of works by João Paulo Feliciano from the 1990s and 2000s belonging to the Serralves collection and a never-seen-before work conceived for the campus of Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Porto. The works presented are representative of different moments in the artist’s career, revealing the continuities and ruptures that have marked his artistic practice over the last thirty years. If the works of the 1990s revolve around the world of rock music and urban reality, the works of 2004 and 2021 show an interest in exploring perceptual phenomena and allow us to distinguish a turning point in the relationship (of fascination/rejection) with technology. There is a constant questioning of the material and linguistic mediums that the artist uses as a way of rethinking our relationship with the world, questioning assumptions of traditional artistic genres in the light of different aspects of folk culture. His ironic and provocative attitude, his desire to involve the spectator in the work’s meaning and, above all, his insatiable appetite for experimentation reveals to be transversal to João Paulo Feliciano’s diverse body of work. The works are presented in different spaces of the UCP – Porto campus, at the Edifício das Artes and the Edifício de Restauro.

Cindy Sherman: Metamorfoses

Until 16/04/2023

12 €

Cindy Sherman: Metamorphosis presents a series of works that span the artist's career from her earliest work to her most recent works. The exhibition was organized in dialogue with the artist and in partnership with The Broad Art Foundation, Los Angeles, an institution that has collected in depth Cindy Sherman's work for over thirty years. Mainly known for photographs in which she portrays herself as her own model, embodying the role of female media-influenced stereotypes in a wide range of personas and environments, Cindy Sherman shoots alone in her studio, serving as artistic director, photographer, makeup artist, hairdresser and subject. The portrait practice she began decades ago is responsible for some of the most striking and influential images in contemporary art. For this ambitious presentation in Serralves, the museum's galleries will undergo a radical transformation, creating a theatrical set to host the storyboard that the artist's photographs make up. The exhibition will also include new work, especially created for the Serralves Museum: a large photographic mural, which will give the exhibition an additional uniqueness. Generally, the artist does not give titles to her works, trying to avoid preconceived interpretations or pre-interpretations that could influence the viewer, preferring to leave the construction of the stories to the discretion of each person. The images are, however, grouped in series and numbered and explore various themes and techniques, thus reinforcing the differentiation and classification: Untitled Film Still (1983-1984), Fashion (1983-84), Bus Rider (1976-2000), The Fairy Tales (1985), The Disasters (1986-89), The Historical Portraits (1988-90) , Sex Pictures (1992), Horror and Surrealistic Pictures (1994), Masks (1995), Broken Dolls (1999), The Hollywood/Hampton Ladies Portraits (2000), The Clowns (2003-05), Society (2008). In the exhibition in Serralves, these series are presented with no chronological order, but rather building a narrative. In Sherman's works, individual compositions and narratives refer to a complete and complex repertoire of female identities: but while the early works are full of visible emotions, in the later photographs the emotions are gradually excluded. The works are not self-portraits, but representations perfected by the distance from the camera or lens that captures them or, as Rosalind Krauss said, they are “a copy without actually having an original”. In the late 1980s, Sherman felt the need to suppress her presence and created unreal and grotesque images, accident scenes, made up of supernatural and terrifying characters who embodied irrational fears and nightmares and created macabre and repulsive settings. Gradually, the artist's body is replaced by fake breasts, human excrescences, bodily fluids, sexual debris, medical prostheses, which later gave rise to Sex Pictures (1992), one of her most daring series, in which Sherman arranges mannequins into pseudo-pornographic tableaux, deliberately un-erotic that challenge the porn industry standards. The artist's return to the centre of the image took place around 2000 with the series Head Shots, where she features a series of studio portraits, or the disturbing series Clowns (2003-05) and, later, images of elderly women. If the fake or artificial body parts force the viewer to confront the staged aspect of the work, the tragic and vulgar appearance of the characters compels him to feel a certain empathy and respect for them. On the other hand, there is an evident change in the positioning of the camera, in the alteration of the sets, in the saturation and overlapping of props and extraneous elements in the composition, as well as the size of the print. Later, in the Society series (2008), Sherman continues her exploration into distorted ideals of beauty, self-image and aging in a society obsessed with youth and status through characters set in sumptuous backgrounds and presenting these photographs in ornate frames. Sherman goes from analogue to digital and, like her characters, she experiments with various possibilities: truly natural settings in her first images, film techniques such as “rear projection”, studio photography (the place where she has greater control over the image construction), the cyclorama and finally construction images on digital backgrounds. Although her work is generally classified by critics and theorists as being associated with feminism, violence and voyeurism and focusing on representation, the artist herself tends to avoid this theoretical instrumentalization and such associations. When building a character, Sherman does not have a specific person in mind but a genre, and the complexity of the narrative is shaped in the specificity of the relationship between the setting and the character.

MACY GRAY + The California Jet Club

13/10/2022

35 €

When she emerged in 1999 with the much applauded “On How Life Is”, Macy Gray made an immediate impact. Thanks to the tremendous success of "I Try," which broke into the US Top 5, the Ohio-born singer's debut album sold around 7 million copies worldwide, making her almost instantly a global star. Over the next decade, the albums followed one after another and Macy built a solid discography with 10 albums, regularly playing on stages and festivals around the world. At the same time, her strong image earned her an equally applauded career in cinema, starting in 2001 with "Training Day", a film with Denzel Washington. She then made her iconic presence felt in other blockbusters like "Spider Man", "For Colored Girls" and "The Paperboy". Recognition for her wide-ranging talents also came via the Grammys: she was nominated a dozen times and won a statuette for best vocal performance with the extraordinary "I Try". Now, Macy Gray is in a new phase of her career. Along with keyboardist Billy Wes, drummer Tamir Barzilay and bassist Alex Kyhn, a trio of prodigious musicians and all multi-instrumentalists with careers that moved from pop and country to jazz and punk, Macy formed California Jet Club, the group who released the fantastic “The Reset”. The group has already performed on high audience ratings tv shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live and has made it clear that it is ready for the world: music with a solid soul-R&B foundation, open to several other sounds (the group even made a version of the “Cop Killer” classic by Ice-T's Body Count) with lyrics that reflect on modern America. Accustomed to the stages and always distinguishing herself as a solid live performer, Macy Gray now lands her California Jet Club at the Coliseu Porto Ageas, for a brilliant and unmissable debut in which, to the new sound of her present, she will add her greatest classics.

Family Film Project

Until 22/10/2022

6 €

We live in a world ruled by the images that reach us through screens and displays. We adhere to the frenetic consumerism of images, the more frantic the greater the torrent of information. In a global world with growing civilizational challenges, where concepts such as war, epidemic or climate crisis seem increasingly palpable and close, it is important that such media images are not neglected as sources of information, but also that they are not devoured uncritically. On the one hand, there is talk of post-truth and the deluge of information; and there is also talk of alienation and escapism in the “society of the spectacle”, to use G. Debord’s term. To these scenarios, we wave the values of science, but also of art. Since its first edition more than a decade ago, the Family Film Project has sought to reconcile the political and epistemological value of images with their aesthetic value, always pointing its focus a little beyond the direct or immediate dimension of the images, beyond of the information they provide, opening up to the performative dimension without harming the archaeological and documentary potential of such images. Whether through ethnographic films, archive or found-footage films, “home movies”, the various forms of experimental film or the hybridization between film and the performing arts, the Family Film Project seeks to highlight the challenges of cinema in its testimonial and artistic double facet: reconciling authenticity with poetry, reality with fiction, the status quo with difference… In this 11th edition, the festival's programme maintains its usual matrix, with several competitive sessions divided into thematic sections: Lives and Places, Memory and Archive and even a competitive session dedicated to Fiction and Animation. In all, the competitive sessions bring together twenty-one films from fifteen different nationalities, including five films produced in Portugal.

We also met those who had stopped talking to friends or family because they couldn't tolerate their political opinions”, emphasises João de Almeida Dias, quoted by the organiser. “João Porfírio and João de Almeida Dias have captured the very heart of today's America in eloquent and evocative documentation. Their photos and words place us directly at the centre of a disunited America”, stresses the exhibition's curator.

Ouviram do Abaporu - Leo Bianchini

29/10/2022

8 €

A screen, a stool and a guitar are the setting for "Ouviram do Abaporu", by the Brazilian singer, songwriter and activist Leo Bianchini. A show that tells the audiovisual history of Brazil's culture under the sign of independence, based on its popular songbook. Under the baton of music history, it is through the understanding of a single Brazilian music that Leo Bianchini will sing excerpts from the urban folk songbook to trace the development of Brazilian art from its independences: the official proclamation by the Emperor D. Pedro, which celebrated 200 years in September, and the proclamation of artistic aesthetics that took place exactly a century ago when the 1922 Modern Art Week took place. Through songs by key names such as Jackson do Pandeiro or Caetano Veloso, text and video screenings, the audience is invited to travel through time and Brazil’s history, told by its greatest cultural asset: music. Directed and scripted by singer and researcher Naira Marcatto, "Ouviram do Abaporu" is part of the MPB - Movimento Porto Brasil programme, which the Coliseu has prepared to celebrate the 200 years of independence of its sister country.
