The detailed programming of “Verão da Casa” will be announced in due course.
The Community “Cascata” (miniature townscapes), an integral part of the São João traditions in the city of Porto, was inaugurated in the Bolhão Temporary Market. The motto for the construction of the community “cascata” was the materialization of a small "house" inspired by the memories that the participants have of the city. Kids and adults, Portuguese and foreign, "got down to work" to build the various "small houses" that make up this colourful “cascata”. The result is now in sight of all!
Musician Pedro Augusto introduces a new sound experience, where it is possible to capture a noise without the original cause being within sight, which will resonate in the consciousness. Open or closed, books are the protagonists of this auditory narrative. Transgenerational and transcultural, these books, ranging from the 16th century to the contemporary era, will communicate through a common practice that has accompanied humanity – divination. Radiesthesia (in the title described as “radiostesia”) is the attempt to find objects, living beings or elements of nature – such as water, precious stones, among others – without the use of scientific equipment. These primitive and archetypal objects will be organised into sections that correspond to different themes, which will give access to the most intimate and obscure areas of the Porto Municipal Public Library.
Ai Weiwei (Beijing, 1957) is a global citizen, artist, thinker and activist who uses various modes of investigation and production in his work, depending on the direction and outcome of the research he currently has in hands. From iconoclastic positions in regard to authority and history — which included the triptych Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn, 1995, and a series of photographs entitled Study of Perspective, (1995 - 2011), in which he shows the middle finger to symbols of power — his output has diversified to encompass architecture, public art and performance. In addition to concerns of form and protest, Ai Weiwei currently measures our existence according to the relation to economic, political, natural, and social forces, uniting craftsmanship with conceptual creativity. Universal symbols of humanity and community, such as bicycles, flowers or trees, as well as the perennial problems of borders and conflicts are reformulated and enhanced through installations, sculptures, films and photographs, while continuing to speak out publicly on issues he believes important. He is one of the most prominent cultural figures of his generation and an example of freedom of expression, both in China and internationally. The works on display — Iron Roots (2019) and Pequi Tree (2018 - 2020) — are part of a body of work that reflects Ai Weiwei's interest and concern with the environment and, more specifically, with the deforestation of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. The exhibition in Serralves was conceived specifically for the park and for the Museum's central room.
Station 1 reveals the history of absence, rather than the history of presence. Fragments and further fragments are used to narrate moments that indicate the existence of the current and previous epochs. Materials from different periods coexist with audiovisual devices and different types of image, to show us how PortuCale - the city that gave Portugal its name - became Porto.
Ever Archive: The Publications and Publication Projects of Hans-Ulrich Obrist. “Ever Archive: The Publications and Publication Projects of Hans Ulrich Obrist” is an exhibition devoted to the Chicago-based publication archive of curator Hans Ulrich Obrist, who is the Artistic Director at Serpentine Galleries in London. The exhibition comprises a series of modules that address the intertwining of documents and their stories: the people, events and institutions that all played a role in bringing them into being. The exhibition also questions, through metaphor and other representations, the different behaviours of an archive: its fragility and instability, its relationship to other archives, as well as its various historical gaps. A central component of the show is a series of vitrine exhibitions that examine not only the historic architecture of the vitrine and its relationship to the “Wunderkammer”, but also the conceptual possibilities that vitrines impose through their physical constraints. “Ever Archive” also includes a history of the archive itself - an archive of the archive - which documents how it has changed over time in relation to the context of technological tools and human knowledge.
The Miró Collection, owned by the Portuguese State, on loan to the Municipality of Porto and deposited at the Serralves Foundation, comprises 85 artworks and includes paintings, sculptures, collages, drawings and tapestries by the renowned Catalan artist. The Collection spans six decades of Joan Miró's work, from 1924 to 1981, thus being an excellent introduction to his work and his main artistic concerns. The exhibition follows on from the conclusion of the works of the Serralves Villa’s restoration and adaptation project, by the architect Álvaro Siza, who had the support of the Porto City Council, under the terms of the protocol that defines the conditions for depositing the Miró Collection in Serralves. Joan Miró (1893-1983), one of the great “form-givers” of the 20th century, was simultaneously an aesthetic “assassin” who challenged the traditional limits of the medium in which he worked. In his art, the different practices dialogue with each other, crossing the mediums: painting communicates with drawing; sculpture seduces woven objects; and collages, always conjugations of disparate entities, function as a major principle or matrix for exploring the depths of reality. This exhibition does not follow a chronological or linear format: the works are thematically aggregated, trying to give a holistic view of the artist's career. The various rooms address different aspects of his art: the development of a sign language; the artist's encounter with abstract painting that was done in Europe and America; his interest in the process and the expressive gesture; its complex responses to the social drama of the 1930s; the innovative approach to collage; the impact of Southwest Asian aesthetics on his drawing practice; and, above all, his incessant curiosity about the nature of materials.
What do Lena D’Água, Ana Deus, Anabela Duarte, Manuela Azevedo or Xana have in common? All of them have a place in Portuguese rock history and are a part of a group of 15 women whose musical careers are going to be celebrated in the exhibition, and in a series of side events that are going to take place in the next 6 months. Symbolically inaugurated on March 8th, International Women’s Day, in Casa Comum (Rectory) of the University of Porto, and with free admission. It will be open until 30 September 2022. Organised by Casa Comum and the Institute of Sociology of the University of Porto, this unprecedented exhibition is born with the aim of paying tribute to “relevant women in Portuguese rock”, from post-25 April period until today. To do so, it proposes to tell their stories through records, cassettes, clothes, props, scribbles of lyrics, staves, drumsticks, musical instruments, among other objects that marked their respective careers.
METAMORFOSES focuses on the profusion and the process of integration of the imaginary and the vegetal, mineral and animal themes in a romantic domestic space, bringing to the halls of the house of Quinta da Macieirinha several pieces, some previously exhibited in the former Romantic Museum and other spaces of Museu da Cidade, others never exhibited, showing the unquestionable quality and diversity of the municipal collections. This exhibition also marks the beginning of the evocation of the centenary of the death of Porto artist, Aurélia de Souza, a key moment of the 2022/2023 programme. The celebrated self-portrait of the artist as “Santo António” (Saint Anthony), made around 1902, will be part of the new collection that brings together paintings, furniture, tapestries and textiles, ceramics, crockery and silverware, as well as other surprising sections of the collection, such as sets of fans, cut-out papers and malacology.
Leonilson was one of the major exponents of a generation of Brazilian artists known as “Geração 80” (80s Generation). After the end of Brazil’s military dictatorship in the mid-1980s, this group of artists celebrated their newly acquired freedom with a gestural, colourful, and expressive style of painting. While American Pop Art appropriated the symbols of a highly industrialized society in the 1980s, the Geração 80s’ art was firmly critical of society. Born in 1957, Leonilson studied art in São Paulo from 1978 to 1981. Apart from Eva Hesse and Blinky Palermo, both of whom he met during his travels in Europe, his first major influence was the Italian transavanguardia movement. Formed in the late 1970s, transavanguardia turned to figuration, ancient mythology, and expressive use of colour. Similarly, Leonilson’s paintings and drawings from this period show an eclectic subjectivism and an emblematic visual language. An exhibition of textiles produced by the Shakers, a Christian American sect, marked a key moment in the artist’s early career. The Shakers’ embroidered maps influenced him greatly and inspired him to embrace textiles as an artistic medium. When Leonilson was diagnosed with AIDS in 1991, his visual language changed significantly: between 1991 and 1993, his work, which resembled a diary, revealed his deteriorating health and showed his concern with death. Towards the end of his life, he was only able to work with needle, thread, and fabric. In this period, language and abstraction, as well as religious, visual and formal language played an important role in Leonilson’s work. The Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art is pleased to present the first major retrospective of the work of the Brazilian artist Leonilson in Portugal. The exhibition presents a selection of over 250 works that encompass a broad range of mediums and styles, from the artist’s early paintings to the introspective embroidery of Leonilson’s last years, providing an overview of his entire oeuvre.
Artist and electro-acoustic composer Tarek Atoui works on large-scale compositions that stem from anthropological, ethnological, musicological, and technical research. His exhibitions weave installations, performances, and educations, in processes that move away from the conventional notion of performance, both for the performer and the audience, and that suggest forms of visual, aural, tactile, and somatic experience of sound. This first exhibition in Portugal is part of the project I/E, ongoing since 2015, in which Atoui captures the sounds of port cities — Athens, Abu Dhabi, Singapore, Beirut or Porto - by recording their harbours’ industrial, human, and ecological activities. Together with artist/recordist Eric La Casa, they listen to sound below the surface of the sea or within materials such as metal, stone, and wood. On Waters’ Witness, the audio recordings of the seaports of Athens, Abu Dhabi and Porto are played through materials chosen in every location — marble stones from Athens, steel beams from Abu Dhabi, and wooden structures housing compost, worms and organic material specifically produced for the Serralves presentation. The work with organic decomposing matter takes Waters’ Witness in a new direction: an acoustic ecology that receives and perpetuates residual sounds through the audible frontiers of a world in flux. This unique soundscape extends from the museum’s central room to the park in the shape of sound constellations, platforms and systems activated through the entire period of the exhibition in scheduled performances, collaborative and educational workshops.
“Ajax et plures” presents a set of works by João Paulo Feliciano from the 1990s and 2000s belonging to the Serralves collection and a never-seen-before work conceived for the campus of Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Porto. The works presented are representative of different moments in the artist’s career, revealing the continuities and ruptures that have marked his artistic practice over the last thirty years. If the works of the 1990s revolve around the world of rock music and urban reality, the works of 2004 and 2021 show an interest in exploring perceptual phenomena and allow us to distinguish a turning point in the relationship (of fascination/rejection) with technology. There is a constant questioning of the material and linguistic mediums that the artist uses as a way of rethinking our relationship with the world, questioning assumptions of traditional artistic genres in the light of different aspects of folk culture. His ironic and provocative attitude, his desire to involve the spectator in the work’s meaning and, above all, his insatiable appetite for experimentation reveals to be transversal to João Paulo Feliciano’s diverse body of work. The works are presented in different spaces of the UCP – Porto campus, at the Edifício das Artes and the Edifício de Restauro.

Premiered in 1664, “Tartufo” [Tartuffe] is the most caustic of Molière's comedies, a meditation on hypocrisy that was censured by the French Church and courts. Tartuffe is an arriviste who uses religion to reach a higher position in the social scale, the emblem of a predatory, cut-throat society. “What time was that and what time is this one in which we live?”, wonders director Tónan Quito, inviting us to establish connections between past and present. This show is presented within the scope of NÓS/NOUS, a project that enriches the theatrical culture exchanges between France, Galicia and Portugal, by looking at them as a scenic common ground. Carried out by four theatres (including the Teatro Nacional of Porto and Teatro Nacional of Lisbon) and by four higher education drama schools, this project supports the professional training and internationalization of students at the end of their academic careers, by bringing them into contact with internationally renowned stage creators.

Starting from mythological and philosophical places, and exploring the character of Albano Beirão, Rui Paixão questions his place as a clown, but also that of the audience as an audience and, eventually, as a clown as well. We all have a notion (and fear) of ridicule, but perhaps it is possible to find reasons to laugh in the discomfort. By taking off, not wearing, the mask. In this creation, premiered in 2021, Rui Paixão confronts the audience with stereotyped images that are part of our imagination when we talk about clowns, confusing them by adulterating and confronting them with texts and intentions that expand the meaning of the word “clown”. Part of Trengo - Festival de Circo do Porto, "Albano" will be at Coliseu Porto Ageas with two intimate sessions, on July 6th, at 7 pm and 9:30 pm.

Emma Ruth Rundle has always been a multifaceted artist, able to express herself through environmental abstractions (as in her debut album “Electric Guitar: One”), maximalist textural explorations (listen to her work with Marriages, Red Sparowes and Nocturnes or the collaborations with Chelsea Wolfe and Thou), as well as in the classical singer-songwriter tradition, with a acoustic guitar in hand (as on the album “Some Heavy Ocean”). But on “Engine of Hell”, her new album, she focuses on the piano and combines it with her voice creating a kind of intimacy, as if we were sitting next to her. These are painful and intimate songs, but her mastery is also revealed in the ease with which we can see ourselves in her sorrow, as if she was holding a black mirror up in front of us.
In the darkness of the caves, sound served as a compass for mankind. Screams were needed to lead the way. Songs were needed to light up the darkness. Here, too, humans and animals scream, search, grope. They move forward as best as they can in the tunnel of times. Is it the foot of the wall or the top of the world? Does life die here or is it reborn? They fall and rise with the same clarity, the same innocence, the same insistence. They want to survive. At any cost. They are a flock. They are a crowd. Almost a family. And in the gaps left by a world in ruins, they invent something new. Another end of the world is possible - it has already begun.
Séverine Chavrier adapts for the stage “Das Kalkwerk” (1970), one of Austrian writer and playwright Thomas Bernhard’s earliest novels. A couple isolates itself from the world and becomes lost in the glacial landscape of a lime mine: he wants to write a book on hearing; she is totally dependent on him, due to her poor health. They live in a conjugal hell, ruled by blackmail, an antechamber of death. By adding a character (a female nurse) that wasn’t in the novel, the French stage director intensifies this violent relationship. A farce tinged with melancholy and despair, “Ils nous ont oubliés” interweaves scenography, video and sound treatment to convey the mental short circuit of the protagonists, where illness mirrors the ruin of an artistic ideal. Séverine Chavrier describes this production as a musical poem. All of Bernhard’s humour and pessimism reverberate throughout this ode to sterility.

Coro Infantil is one of Casa da Música’s in-house ensembles, justifying by its own talent its public debut on World Music Day 2017. Under the direction of Portuguese conductor Raquel Couto, and with around 50 voices, this artistic and educational project has grown steadily and has already become an indispensable element of Casa da Música, much loved by the audiences. The children's enthusiasm and their recognition for the continuous training work developed here was particularly noticeable during the lockdown, when, despite the physical distance, they all got together to record a video, broadcasted online.
Leon Bridges is part of a tradition of great soul voices that have the gift to win the hearts of the Portuguese audiences. With Nick Mason on drums, the line-up includes Gary Kemp of Spandau Ballet, Lee Harris of Blockheads, Guy Pratt and Dom Beken. Nick Mason is the only Pink Floyd member to have played on all of the band's studio albums, thus going back to the group's earliest records. Nick Mason's "Saucerful of Secrets" came about after waiting nearly a quarter of a century for Pink Floyd to reunite. The group features Spandau Ballet guitarist, Gary Kemp, longtime Pink Floyd bassist, Guy Pratt, guitarist Lee Harris and keyboard player Dom Beken. Mason stresses that the group is not a tribute band, but wanted to “capture the spirit” of the time; emphasising that Kemp was not a replacement for original Pink Floyd vocalist Syd Barrett, who left the band in 1968.
Rottweiler is Antonio Bermúdez’s nom de guerre. Jaime Reverter is the presenter of “Luzes e Sombras” [Lights and Shadow], a “hard and real” show that does not “sugar-coat the facts”. A TV studio, a live interview, an outcome tinged by the colours of tragedy. “Rottweiler” is a reflection on the use of violence by people who engage in far- right-wing movements and the way certain TV shows manipulate information. There is something premonitory his work by Spanish playwright Guillermo Heras, written in 2006, at a time in which the concepts of “fake news” and “post-truth” had not yet achieved the central position they hold today, can be seen as possessing a premonitory quality. Stage director Ricardo Simões brings us a scenic approach that questions how lies are diffused under the guise of truth. “What can we believe when we hear, read or see news?”, asks this production by Teatro do Noroeste – Centro Dramático de Viana. What is truth? What is violence?
The comedy directed by and starring Diogo Infante “O Amor é Tão Simples”, arrives in Porto for 4 unique performances at Coliseu Porto Ageas. In the original “Present Laughter”, this comedy, written in 1939, celebrates the legendary free spirit of playwright Noël Coward. Widely regarded as the author's most autobiographical play, it premiered in 1942, performed by the author himself. Peter O’Toole, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Frank Langella and more recently, Andrew Scott, in England, and Kevin Kline, in the USA, are some of the actors who have played the famous Garry Essendine. Guilherme de Andrade is a famous actor with a vast legion of fans, who, attracted by his charm and charisma, turn his home into true chaos. In the week before he leaves on tour to Africa, he is forced to deal with his devoted entourage: his secretary, his ex-wife, a passionate and ambitious young actress, an unhinged aspiring playwright, his best friend's wife who is determined to seduce him, his agent, his producer, the butler and the housekeeper. Simultaneously, Guilherme feels tormented by a midlife crisis, which insists on manifesting itself whenever he looks in the mirror. “O Amor é Tão Simples” is a delicious and timeless comedy that reflects on the role of fame, love and the theatre itself.
Set in the Roaring Twenties, Chicago tells the story of two vaudeville rivals accused of murder. Velma, a nightclub star, is serving time for killing her husband and sister after catching them together; Roxie, an ambitious chorus girl, ended up behind bars for killing her lover. Both enlist the services of Mama Morton, the prison matron, and shrewd lawyer Billy Flynn, to create a media frenzy and prepare for their big comeback into the world of showbiz. Chicago is one of the most successful musicals in the world. Based on a play of the same name, written by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins, the musical won 6 Tony Awards and six Oscars for the film adaptation of Rob Marshall. The original production, choreographed by Bob Fosse, opened on Broadway in 1975 and has had over 900 performances, touring over 24 countries and being performed in 12 different languages.
The Bristol Cathedral Choir is in Portugal and, on July 15th, at 6:30 pm, will give a special concert at Carmo Church. The existence of the Bristol choir dates back to the foundation of the Augustinian monastery, in the year 1140. When it became the Cathedral in 1542, the choir already performed the function of singing in church services. Over the centuries, the goal has remained the same. The choir consists of 28 boys and girls, all of whom attend Bristol Cathedral Choir School, as well as 10 adult singers. The school was the first of its kind to have been founded in the UK. The choir has performed in Poland, France, Germany, Italy and the United States. They have made several television and radio appearances, such as appearing on The White Princess series and BBC's Singing Live on Christmas Day 2016. The Choir has performed before the Pope in 2001, and with renowned soprano Emma Kirkby on Bristol Festival. One of the young singers won the 2005 Choirboy of the Year award, given by BBC Radio 2.
Following the Shakespeare / Purcell trilogy (presented between 2010 and 2019), Teatro Praga returns to the big stage, in partnership with Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, to present “A Sagração da Primavera” [The Rite of Spring], a ballet with music by Stravinsky, originally choreographed by Nijinsky for the Ballets Russes. Given that this work is a milestone in the history of the performing arts, a succès de scandale, and taking into account its symbolic weight, Teatro Praga’s “A Sagração da Primavera”, carries on the wish to bring history to the stage and understand how it reverberates in contemporaneity making a farewell into a celebration.
“Segunda 2” [Monday 2] (2021) puts us in mind of “Sábado 2” [Saturday 2], the inaugural choreography of Companhia Paulo Ribeiro, premiered in 1995. 26 years apart, one thing connects them: the restart of a new cycle of work. “Segunda 2” does not want to recollect the past or reflect on the future. What drives it is a desire to inscribe itself in the urgency of the present. As if to say: “We are here to dance. Tomorrow, we’ll see about it.” In times of lockdown, it signals the euphoria of returning to choreographic creation, using the notion of fault as a springboard. But let us not be afraid of paradoxes: here, fault acts as a “catalyst of energy and emotion”, a combination of risk and action. Six performers with different backgrounds – classical and contemporary dance, street dance and new circus – bring a multiform physicality to “Segunda 2”. It is in the company of these bodies that Paulo Ribeiro moves forward, without looking back. “We are going to be both individuals and a collective. We are going to rediscover joy. We are going to keep on dancing.”
When Silva released “Ao Vivo em Lisboa” (2020) it was clear that this was a record that bore witness to a huge talent in music sung in our language, but also to the strong relationship that exists between this talent and the Portuguese audience. Since his debut album, “Claridão”, released in 2012, this relationship has not stopped growing, in a love reciprocated by both parties. There are reasons for this: SILVA increasingly is increasingly becoming one of the great names of new Brazilian music, thanks to albums such as “Brasileiro” or the latest one “Cinco”. Portugal remains on SILVA's map and SILVA remains on the map of Portuguese melomaniacs. And the next chapter of this story is also written in the invicta city. The Brazilian musician will perform on July 17th at Coliseu Porto Ageas.
After a year and seven months away from the stage, Luis Chataing will return to present "Básico", a Stand Up Comedy show that connects with the spirit of many to rediscover the simpler things, the essential things, so necessary to understand how to get through this time of radical change. The show is also the opportunity for Chataing to share his version of what happened during the unexpected period of quarantine, virus, working and studying from home, old and new normal. “Básico” is the fifth stand-up show of Chataing's career that (those of us who've watched the rehearsals) can guarantee he hasn't learned anything from the previous four shows, and that's okay… that's okay. Join Chataing on the initial “Básico” tour and clap your hands, clap a lot, you will see him cry on stage, age and quarantine have made him a crybaby.
Robert Glasper is the leader of a new sonic paradigm, bridging different genres. He has won four Grammys and nine nominations in eight different categories, as well as an Emmy for the song he wrote with Common and Karriem Riggins for Ava DuVernay's critically hailed documentary “13th”. The seminal album “Black Radio” brought new directions to the crossover languages between soul, R&B, jazz and hip hop, and was a rare success both commercially and critically acclaim. Keyboardist on Kendrick Lamar's acclaimed “To Pimp A Butterfly”, Glasper has partnered with legendary artists such as Ledisi, Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West, Jill Scott and Erykah Badu. More recently he released “Fuck Yo Feelings”, his first record on Loma Vista Records, joining the likes of YBN Cordae, Herbie Hancock and Yebba – nominated for a Grammy in 2021. He formed the supergroup Dinner Party, with Terrace Martin, Kamasi Washington and 9th Wonder. In 2020, he released “Better Than Imagined” (Grammy for best R&B song in 2021), a preview of the new album “Black Radio 3”, released already this year. Featuring H.E.R and Meshell Ndegeocello, this song underlines Glasper's role as an artist who champions black music, black people and the possibility of a better future.
Teatro São João hosts the premiere of the show that brings to a close the fifth edition of the “Território” programme. Created by Estúdios Victor Córdon, it provides twelve young dancers from dance schools across the country with training from two internationally-recognised choreographers. This edition joins Marcos Morau, a world-renowned Catalan choreographer and founder of the La Veronal dance company, with Canadian Dorotea Saykaly, winner in 2021 of the first edition of the Emily Molnar Emerging Choreographer award. Sara Bernardo directed the short film included in the show, as winner of the Território | Estúdios Victor Córdon, for the Best Portuguese Director at InShadow – Lisbon ScreenDance Festival 2021. This programme brings its participants closer to the aesthetic diversity of contemporary dance, allowing them to develop a plural outlook that will help them clarify the artistic future of each one.
Considered by the New York Times at the time of its premiere as “among the best seen this year”, the ballet Amaramália, created by Vasco Wellenkamp originally in 2004, returns to the stage as part of the celebrations of the Centenary of the Birth of Amália Rodrigues – extended since 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Seduced by the emotion and dramatic force of Amália's voice, Vasco Wellenkamp explains that the chosen fados fit into a musical mesh formed by a collage of several musical works. The play begins as an imaginary projection, a ceremony without defined characters and time. Its space can be the obscure geometry of Lisbon's alleys and taverns, or a window overlooking the light of a nameless place. “AmarAmália” is a tribute to the extraordinary and unforgettable artist who made fado universal, and marks the return to Porto, and to Coliseu, of Companhia Portuguesa de Bailado Contemporâneo. Not to be missed on July 22nd, the eve of Amália Rodrigues' birthday.
Yuri Dojc, a photographer renowned for his portraits of Jewish Holocaust survivors, and Katya Krausova, a veteran British filmmaker who, in 1997, won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film (with "Kolya") and is now also the exhibition's curator, show the memories of the inhabitants of Bardejov, a small Slovak seaside town. The exhibition and the accompanying documentary began its journey in 2009 and have already travelled to three continents, in the most diverse venues: from the Cambridge Manuscript Library to the United Nations building in New York, to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, followed by Berlin and Moscow. Currently, several pictures from the exhibition are already part of the permanent collection of the Library of Congress in Washington (USA).
