João Vieira: Works from the Serralves Collection

Until 12/09/2021

This exhibition at Palácio da Bolsa presents two iconic works from the early 1970s that expand the artist's research on linguistic signs beyond the field of painting. Caixa Branca [White Box] (1971) proposes to create, relying on chance and on the participation of the public, a new language. The work contains a low-tech system of lamps and switches through which the letters of the alphabet can be lit up or turned off, in a playful invention of new words and syntaxes. The work "A" grande [Capital “A”] (1970) is the only trace preserved and restored by Vieira of his first performance, entitled O Espírito da Letra [The Spirit of the Letter]. In this “action-spectacle” he presented a series of large-format letters that were later destroyed by him and a group of children. By breaking with the limits of two-dimensional painting, Vieira's letters took a corporeal form and created a physical confrontation with the spectators and with the agents of performative destruction. This action is permeated by an implicit critique of language as the support for discourse. These historic artworks are presented at Palácio da Bolsa as part of the national touring programme of the Serralves Collection, which aims to make the Foundation's collection accessible to diverse audiences from all regions of the country.

Until 19/09/2021

12 €

This big exhibition dedicated to the oeuvre by Louise Bourgeois (Paris, 1911, New York, 2010) spans seven decades, showing works made by the artist between the late 1940s and 2010. Visited and revisited in countless exhibitions held over the past decades in various museum spaces around the world, Louise Bourgeois’ vast and unique body of work deals with themes indelibly associated with experiences and traumatic events of her childhood - family, sexuality, body, death and the unconscious - which the artist treated and exorcised through her art. This exhibition is organised by the Serralves Foundation - Museum of Contemporary Art and the Glenstone Museum, Potomac, Maryland, USA, in collaboration with The Easton Foundation, New York, and co-produced with the Voorlinden Museum & Gardens, Wassenaar, Netherlands. To Unravel a Torment is curated by Emily Wei Rales, Director and co-founder of the Glenstone Museum. At Serralves, the exhibition was organised by Philippe Vergne, Director of the Museum, with Paula Fernandes, Curator. This exhibition was generously supported by Hauser & Wirth Gallery.

Alberto Giacometti – Peter Lindbergh. Seizing the Invisible

Until 24/09/2021

14 €

"If someone were to ask me what the five most beautiful days of my life have been, that day with Giacometti's sculptures would be certainly in the top three". This is how Peter Lindbergh described the day he was invited to photograph Alberto Giacometti's art collection at the artist's Foundation in Paris. From the outcome of this encounter emerged a joint exhibition, of Giacometti's sculptures and Lindbergh's photographs. It is this exhibition that now arrives at MMIPO – Museu e Igreja da Misericórdia do Porto. So far, this joint exhibition has only been exhibited at the Giacometti Institute in Paris. It is an intimate dialogue between the work of Alberto Giacometti (1901 - 1966), one of the most acclaimed sculptors of the 20th century and the photography of Peter Lindbergh, which reveals a notable similarity in the way they represent reality. This initiative is also a tribute to the legendary fashion photographer who died prematurely in September 2019 and who was fully involved in the process of bringing the exhibition to Porto. The exhibition comprises more than 110 works, including bronze sculptures and drawings by Alberto Giacometti, as well as photographs by Peter Lindbergh. In an exclusive room, some of the most iconic portraits by the fashion photographer will be on display, including those featuring Naomi Campbell, Uma Thurman and Julianne Moore.

Jorge Molder

Until 03/10/2021

This exhibition, shown at the mezzanine of the Serralves Library, brings together works by Jorge Molder (Lisbon, 1947) selected from a wider set of works in the Serralves collection. The photographs presented belong to the “T. V.” (1995), “La Reine vous salue” (2001), “Tangram” (2004/08), “Call for Papers” (2013) and also “Zizi” (2013). Molder's work is known mainly for his black and white photographs, in which the artist photographs himself (only his face, full body and hands) usually wearing a dark suit and white shirt, an idea that is contradicted by his two latest series. References from literature, film, music or art history, as well as from the everyday, life and its uncertain and unpredictable nature, are crucial in his oeuvre, as they can constitute the point from which can derive and build something. In this sense, and because the exhibition takes place in the Library, the exhibition is complemented with bibliographic references important for the artist available for consultation, including some of his books and exhibition catalogues.

Ai Weiwei: Entrelaçar

Until 09/07/2022

12 €

Ai Weiwei (Beijing, 1957) is a global citizen, artist, thinker and activist who uses various modes of investigation and production in his work, depending on the direction and outcome of the research he currently has in hands. From iconoclastic positions in regard to authority and history — which included the triptych Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn, 1995, and a series of photographs entitled Study of Perspective, (1995 - 2011), in which he shows the middle finger to symbols of power — his output has diversified to encompass architecture, public art and performance. In addition to concerns of form and protest, Ai Weiwei currently measures our existence according to the relation to economic, political, natural, and social forces, uniting craftsmanship with conceptual creativity. Universal symbols of humanity and community, such as bicycles, flowers or trees, as well as the perennial problems of borders and conflicts are reformulated and enhanced through installations, sculptures, films and photographs, while continuing to speak out publicly on issues he believes important. He is one of the most prominent cultural figures of his generation and an example of freedom of expression, both in China and internationally. The works on display — Iron Roots (2019) and Pequi Tree (2018 - 2020) — are part of a body of work that reflects Ai Weiwei's interest and concern with the environment and, more specifically, with the deforestation of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. The exhibition in Serralves was conceived specifically for the park and for the Museum's central room.

Azul e Ouro – Esmaltes em Portugal da Época Medieval à Época Moderna The Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis has opened the exhibition Azul e Ouro – Esmaltes em Portugal da Época Medieval à Época Moderna, dedicated exclusively and for the first time in Portugal to artistic enamel. The exhibition is one of the «founding» pieces of the Museum's collection, a series of 26 enamel plaques painted in the 16th century, from the Monastery of Santa Cruz de Coimbra, to bring together and compare in an unprecedented way various enamel techniques applied in a sumptuous set of liturgical, devotional and ornament objects. The pieces that will be exhibited were produced between the 12th and 19th centuries, especially in the workshops in the Limoges region, renowned as the most prestigious. There are several depictions of this singular and demanding technique of ornamentation as is the enamel. The exhibition will bring to Porto several national treasures, including the triptych of the Passion of Christ from the Museu Nacional Frei Manuel do Cenáculo, one of the enamel pieces existing in our country with the greatest international recognition. The “Azul e Ouro” exhibition also includes other highly prestigious pieces such as two vaults from the Cathedral of Viseu, 12th century pieces coveted by the illicit antiques market, stolen in 1980 and found years later in Milan in a joint action by the Portuguese Detective Force (Polícia Judiciária) and Interpol, or a book binding plate from the late 12th century, early 13th century, accidentally found in an excavation between Leiria and the Monastery of Batalha. The last section of the exhibition is dedicated to the revivals, replicas and counterfeiting that were produced on a large scale throughout Europe, throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, enchanting and deceiving the eyes of museum conservators and private collectors in Europe and in the U.S.

Museu da Cidade opens the exhibition “Errata – Uma Revisão Feminista à História do Design Gráfico Português”. The exhibition will present the work of 20th century female designers who were left out of the history of Portuguese design and, in doing so, will cast a critical eye on the mechanisms still present that allow and propagate these omissions. From the collection, documentation and presentation of the work of female graphic designers, the exhibition will show women who were overlooked in the history of design. An “errata” (erratum) to correct an omission present in the history of Design.

Il Divino Michelangelo & Il Genio Da Vinci

Until 09/01/2022

10.5 €

“Il Divino Michelangelo & Il Genio Da Vinci” is an abstract journey inspired by the artistic creation of two great Renaissance artists: Da Vinci (Leonardo di Ser Piero da Vinci, 1452-1519) and Michelangelo (Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni, 1475-1564). The journey begins with the legacy of the artist Michelangelo, known as the Divine One. We approach his work from its genesis to its influences in the various artistic aspects - painting, sculpture and architecture. As if he were anointed by God to materialise it, Michelangelo shapes several iconic works. In the show, we revisited the hand in the fresco of The Creation of Adam (fresco, 1511), the sculptures of David (1501) the warrior who faced Goliath, and of Bacchus (1596). There are also references to Roman mythology and biblical references like the work of the Pietà (sculpture, 1498) and several paintings on the Sistine Chapel’s Ceiling (1508-1512) where it is possible to observe “The Flood” and “The Last Judgment”. The journey ends at the starting point: The Creation of Adam. The next stage of the trip follows, where we contemplate the mind of the restless genius Leonardo Da Vinci, in a visual show through his writings, research, inventions and studies, up to his main works, such as Vitruvian Man (1490), the paintings of Last Supper (1495-98) and the Mona Lisa (1503-06).

Other People Place by Ryan Gander

Until 11/09/2021

Carr has envisaged a curatorial concept which places particular emphasis on the involvement of people in Gander’s work and this will be first, exclusive illumination of this aspect in the artist’s extensive solo career. This focus gathers additional context in the present, at a time where human relations worldwide are being addressed, revaluated and questioned, and potentially renewed. Gander has become internationally renowned for his prolific output that moves ceaselessly between a multitude of artforms including sculpture, painting, drawing, installation, performance and graphic design. The unrestricted approach of Gander’s practice is mirrored by the open, layered and often fractured thematic nature of his work, which posits questions of language and knowledge, as well as the act of artmaking itself. Many of the artist’s works are infused with narratives that are seemingly belied by his works’ visual appearance. He places down clues that invite viewers to unravel, decipher and ultimately form their own connections to what can be seen and what is eluded to, enticing how our cognition, perception and understanding takes place. Mapping out the collaborative and communicative nature of work made by Gander over the years, Other People Place draws out humanistic relations and places fundamental questions into the foreground regarding our lived experience. The exhibition includes works that have people as their subject, moving between forms of representation that are clear and abstract. Artists and artisans are featured within the exhibition, as well as the artist’s family and when the artist himself is represented it is through the lens of somebody else. In a number of previously unseen works, forms of communication and language are present, suggesting newly found ways of interacting, yet grounded in current societal forms of protest. The net of relations that exist among people both in and in-between the works presented in the exhibition – including you, the viewer – also strike up another conversation when they turn to the gallery itself, pointing to its location and history. Many works are the result of conversations with and the use of artisans and fabricators. Occupying an historic building in Porto, the gallery was a former workplace for stonemasons who were once active in the building and continue to operate elsewhere in the city.

Fausto Bordalo Dias

Until 04/09/2021

30 €

“Atrás dos Tempos Vêm Tempos” is a song that Fausto first sang at “Madrugada dos Trapeiros”, in 1977, with the aroma of carnations still fresh in everyone's memory. Almost 20 years later, this title would be chosen for an anthology of his work. Now, it is used again as the title of a rare performance. It is not only rare because Fausto is parsimonious when it comes to stepping back on stage, he who always chose to be reserved rather than flamboyant, who always preferred absence to the limelight. It is rare because almost every time Fausto took his creations to the stage he did so with the idea that the present, and not the memory, was what deserved his attention. Usually, a concert meant the exploration of the latest work, the opportunity to exhibit live what had been so painstakingly created in the studio. The idea of “greatest hits” never found a great echo in his spirit. However, it is undeniable that in his 5 decades of an applauded career, the man who climbed a river, jumped beyond the mountain ranges, stepped on burning ground and climbed mountains, left many milestones in his path. It will be from these milestones that this new performance will take place, at Casa da Música and in a world that is already expected to be different.

Così Fan Tutte

04/09/2021

15 €

80 years are history, mission, tradition and responsibility. 2021 marks the return of projects that are part of the Coliseu’s genesis, and opera is one of its main investments. On September 4th, the season opens with “Così fan tutte”, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The third and final opera in the successful trilogy of Mozart's collaborations with the Venetian librettist Lorenzo da Ponte, after “The marriage of Figaro” in 1786 and “Don Giovanni” in 1787, the plot of “Così fan tutte” ( 1789) revolves around two young couples, inexperienced on the boundaries between fantasy and reality: Guglielmo and Ferrando, who, manipulated by the cynical D. Alfonso, are led to bet on the fidelity of their respective girlfriends, Fiordiligi and Dorabella. With Lorenzo da Ponte, Mozart created three musical and theatrical masterpieces, ending with this controversial work in two acts, revolutionary at the time, which cast a different look on the relationships between men and women, but above all on the human condition. Despite the title “Così fan tutte, ossia La scuola degli amanti”… (“That's how they are, that is, The school of lovers…”), the story also casts a critical eye on the conduct of male characters, seducing the audience with witty jokes, amusing ironies and novelistic twists that translate into hard lessons about the depths of love. “Così fan tutte” will be presented at “Coliseu Porto Ageas” starring highly talented national artistic bodies and soloists, to be announced soon, in a co-production with the “Politécnico do Porto”.

Since then, he has proved to be an eclectic artist, working in different artistic disciplines and fields, such as painting, sculpture, performance, sound, multimedia, as well as set design and experimental electronic music. His earliest works from 1980 were paintings, but already in the early 1990s he introduced sound in his work, which happens for the first time in the exhibition “Mute… life” (Galeria Atlântica, Porto, 1992), from which a work is featured here. In that exhibition, sound was still autonomous from the visual works that made up the exhibition, acting as an enveloping soundtrack and aggregating the various elements on display. From then on, sound became more and more relevant, fully integrating the work, visually and conceptually, in the same way as drawing, painting or sculpture. Tudela works and incorporates the various disciplines without hierarchies or boundaries between them, precisely reflecting the permeability between languages that becomes one of the main characteristics of his work. Sound gains prominence, is treated visually, often materialized in sculptures through the incorporation of the devices that generate it — loudspeakers, magnetic tapes, cables, speakers are plastic material in a dual aspect, visual and acoustic. Tudela's artistic practice is inseparable from human existence and the world, which has manifested itself in different ways throughout its trajectory, represented in this exhibition in a selection of nine works.

Arranjo Floral

Choreographer and dancer Filipe Pereira presents “Arranjo Floral” (Floral Arrangement), a lecture-performance about an artist born in Fátima, among huge processions, flower arrangements and religious souvenir shops. A journey that takes us through a life spanning from faith to atheism, from virginity to sexual awakening, from flower art to dance and vice versa. Accompanied by flowers, choreographies and stories, the choreographer puts forward a reflection on how much of our past lies in everything we do, how much of our destiny is written and how much it is in our hands.

BITCHO - às escâncaras

Until 18/09/2021

There is an unsettling and enchanting visceral quality in BITCHO. A hybrid being that swallows its own mutant condition and expels it in bardic and shamanic spasms. There is an aggregative and metamorphic universality in BITCHO. A beast that is people, in-between harshness and fragility, between sensuality and disgust, between words and images from another time-today. Ancestry turned into an encounter in the middle of the path of all paths. Tracks turned into a fragmented and united body. There is a BITCHO that channels murmurs and ecstasies. As if they were skin. As if they were flesh. As if they were bone. There is a bone that frightens the soul and wakes it with a scare. A humanoid, mestizo, nomadic bone that moves from being to being and prepares for a war. There is something that is before artifice, shaped intelligence – Gisela Leal

Zefiro Torna: uma degustação de vinhos musical

17/09/2021

30 €

In his motet “Si bene perpendi”, the Renaissance composer Orlando di Lasso says something like: “If I'm not mistaken, there are five reasons for drinking: the visit of a guest, the present thirst, as well as future thirst, good wine, the preservation of individual rights and awareness of the reproduction of fleas.” “Lassus Grand Cru” is a concert with wines suited to the music that will be played. Or maybe... a wine tasting with music designed for its aromas and flavours. The compositions come from the Renaissance and are signed by Orlando di Lasso and some of his contemporaries. On stage is the award-winning ensemble Zefiro Torna, known for giving life to the medieval, Renaissance and Baroque cultural heritage in an absolutely original way, privileging the intersections of different musical traditions with other arts, science and philosophy.

SCOLARI are António M. Silva (Sal Grosso, Peak Bleak), Bruno Pereira (Aires, Shikabala, Peak Bleak) and Luís Vicente in a clearly exploratory dialogue based on ideas and concepts common to the trio, such as noise / silence, abstract / concrete, melodic / dissonant, bitter / sweet. Atravessar a Fronteira - Os novos babilónios

Until 21/11/2021

The concept 'New Babylonians' was developed by Guy Debord, Constant Nieuwenhuys, Har Oudejans and Pinot-Gallizio within the situationist project, New Babylon, and is related to some of the pivotal notions that underpinned the movement - such as psychogeography, wandering, unitary urbanism. Inspired by this concept the artist and curator, Pedro G. Romero, proposes to Galeria Municipal do Porto an exercise in questioning our perception of the lives of nomadic groups, Romani people, flamencos and exiled liberationists. The exhibition offers an analysis of the sensitive field of these approaches to life with a particular focus on their movement in the Americas, Africa and other Atlantic archipelagos. The city of Porto acts as a starting geography for inquiring about routes, flows and wanderings of these ‘new Babylonians’ from the Portuguese context and its border territories.

A Canção da Terra

Wine has been enjoyed and celebrated alongside this other great pleasure, music. In the programme for this concert, pieces by three great Austrian composers evoke this connection in different ways. Starting with a festive overture, a famous waltz by Johann Strauss II, and “The Song of the Earth”, one of Mahler's most original and fascinating creations. Written in the last years of his life and unpublished at the time of his death, the work falls between the genres of symphony and orchestral song and derives from Chinese poetry, which Mahler serves with an especially imaginative and refined orchestration. Orquestra Sinfónica also performs the rare and highly original “Der Wein”, in which Alban Berg combines Mahler's heritage, dodecaphonism and a profoundly eclectic expressive variety.

Paisajes Para No Colorear

18/09/2021

10 €

In its sixth edition, MEXE aims at “reinventing a way of being together, in order to experience the risk of becoming human again”. The International Art and Community Meeting is back in the city and at Teatro Carlos Alberto, choosing “risk” as its overarching theme. That concept runs through “Paisajes Para No Colorear” by the Chilean company La Re-Sentida, a show that is the end result of a long process of gathering testimonies from more than one hundred girls who were victims of violence. On stage, nine Chilean teen girls use real-life cases to look at the world and at the brutality they have witnessed or experienced. They depict a society that has internalized and normalized gender violence, attempting to overcome injustices and inequalities in an unprecedented cultural revolution. Directed by Marco Layera, “Paisajes Para No Colorear” is complemented by “Tenemos Mucho que Decir”, a workshop where the collective La Re-Sentida intends to explore the subjective worlds of each participant, their immediate experiences, references, concerns, needs and imaginations. Its goal? To discover, via theatrical expressions, a support for social and ideological demonstration that may yield an effective contribution to the group of participants and to the community where they perform.

Pandemic - I Don’t Know Karate, But I Know Ka-Razor!

Until 21/11/2021

Pandemic takes us to a zero-degree state to confront the fragility and finitude of the body, disease and sanity, and the human struggles rooted in the world and in nature. This exhibition is the result of an invitation made by Galeria Municipal do Porto to the artist Filipe Marques to question viral concepts. In his work, the artist starts from apocalyptic poetry to lead us, as spectators, to learn about the powerlessness of the human condition and to an attempt to control invisible contaminations or a balance of forces and resistances. Filipe Marques studied in Portugal and Germany, and his work develops from the theories of modern philosophers and writers of Classical Antiquity, in an attempt to understand Humanity and the construction of a God. He uses anachronistic devices with images of people and places, re-enacting ruined urban landscapes and plundered museographies, and revisiting metaphors about failures and self-destructions that, as an artist, he does not want to escape.

Os Músicos do Tejo e Eduardo Paniagua - 500 anos da viagem de Magalhães

20/09/2021

16 €

Coliseu Porto Ageas will host a concert commemorating the 500th anniversary of the first circumnavigation voyage. A concert that brings together the Portuguese Os Músicos do Tejo and the Spaniards Música Antigua on stage in a musical adventure, with musical direction of Os Músicos do Tejo and Eduardo Paniagua, musician and an expert of early medieval music. This concert also includes the participation of the fado singer Marco Oliveira. The concert's repertoire features pieces that Fernão de Magalhães (Ferdinand Magellan) and his sailors might have heard on their voyages across seas and ports, about stars, heroes, loves and nostalgia, from the “vilancicos” and romances of Hispanic songbooks of the late 15th century and early 16th century. Songs that emotionally recount the great maritime adventure that forever changed the perception of the world, the heroic acts of the sailors who carried it through the ports and seas they crossed. A performance with commentary, and featuring the presentation and historical contextualization by Juan Marchena, which commemorates the voyage promoted by the Crown of Spain and commanded by the Portuguese navigator Fernão de Magalhães (1480-1521), appointed by Carlos I (Charles I), with the objective of finding a new route to the Spice Islands. With a strong multimedia component by Miguel Osório/ La Valise d’Images, the performance that now arrives at Coliseu Porto Ageas is distinct and original. A co-production with Transiberia Productions, in partnership with Estrutura de Missão do V Centenário da Primeira Viagem de Circum-Navegação, and with artistic direction by Carlos Gomes.

Caixa de Luz - João Gil Convida

João Gil brings the show “Caixa de Luz” to Porto for a 5-day residency in Sala 2 of Casa da Música and invites Tatanka, Tiago Nacarato, Pedro Abrunhosa, Vozes da Rádio and Maria Mendes and Miguel Araújo to join him in stage, from 22 to 26 September, respectively. Signed by João Gil, “Caixa de Luz” is much more than a concert that features different guests every night. “Caixa de Luz” is also a visual experience, in which plastic artist Ana Mesquita signs the scenography, having created close to a hundred images and videos inspired by the musician's work, and helping to create, as the name implies, a “Caixa de Luz” which lights up the boundaries usually built between artist and audience. In short, “Caixa de Luz” is a journey through the songbook of João Gil, one of the most prolific composers in the history of Portuguese music of the last decades, who has been discovering himself as a performer, something that is quite evident in his latest singles, “O Exacto Oposto”, “A Marcha da Polícia”, “Quântica” and the most recent one “Dedo do Meio”.

Classe do Jaime

Until 24/09/2021

Distrust in political life, distance from the sensitive and the bodies, the increased power of technology, climate emergency, social disorientation and emptying of public space dispute the everyday life of cities. In its sixth edition, MEXE - International Art and Community Meeting focuses on the theme “The risk”, accepting it as part of life, embracing it as essential to artistic creation. The performance “Classe do Jaime” fulfils this desire to take risks at the intersection of worlds that often seem distanced. In the region of Santarém — the starting point of this creation —, in Minde's typical language, there is no word for “dance”, but there are two for “ball”: “O-do-Barreiro” and “Classe do Jaime”. This is a work done by two, based on the traditional dances from “Serra De Aire” and “Serra dos Candeeiros”. A female dancer and a musician meet with various groups, for a continued practice of this type of repertoire. Under the surface of the work, questions were asked that call for topics such as gender, eroticism and weight to be composed. What does traditional dance ask contemporary dance?

UMWELT (2003)

Until 25/09/2021

12 €

UMWELT, conceived as an environment with its own rules, employs a shrewd staging that uses doors and mirrors, openings and closings, which organise our fleeting vision. Within this vibrant framework, made possible by the amplified sound of three guitars, moving bodies go back and forth, appear, disappear and embark on instants of everyday life. They might brandish an object, hug, walk, eat or disappear. The machine gradually starts to go out of control, stops working, repeats itself and starts up again. The various bodies in the space split apart and repeat themselves on the brink of their own existence. UMWELT hollows out the future of our environment in all its vanity and fragility.

Who doesn't recognise the delicate flute that makes Peer Gynt's “Morning” emerge? Or the “The Hall of the Mountain King”, which evokes the trolls of the folk Nordic imagination, and which has been featured so many times in film and television? Both are part of the incidental music that the Norwegian Edvard Grieg wrote for Ibsen’s play, whose most memorable moments make up the two suites featured in this programme. Sibelius is also featured in this programme. The serene “Symphony No. 6”, in which includes a glimpse of appreciation for the purification of Palestrina's style, was able to remind its author of “the aroma of the first snow”. The Finnish composer's orchestral art is further illustrated by one of his most notorious symphonic poems, “En Saga”, which he considered to be his most profound work, encompassing his whole youth.

Orquestra Barroca yields to the pleasures of wine... Better yet, it surrenders to music with the most varied references to this drink with thousands of years of history. Be it a Purcell scene starring a drunken poet, a Marais suite centred on the lovers of Bacchus, the god of wine. The pleasures of another drink, coffee, are evoked with excerpts from a Bach comic cantata. The second part of the concert is dedicated to Händel's oratorio “Belshazzar”, based on the biblical account of the fall of Babylon and the liberation of the Jews. Among the excerpts presented is a feast with large quantities of wine promoted by Balthazar, the king of Babylon.

Mal - Embriaguez Divina

Until 01/10/2021

To explore the various forms of evil, a group sinking into a sea of paper turns into a choir positioned on a rostrum. The title of this work by Marlene Freitas makes several references to the ambivalence of evil. It can barely refer to restlessness, discomfort, pain, suffering, agony, grief, torment, emptiness, horror and also evil. However, “Embriaguez Divina” (Divine Inebriation) posits evil as a state of divine hallucination, of Dionysian ecstasy. Evil takes many forms. It appears as a determining force in a large number of stories, and theatre has long been a context in which it is revealed and exposed. For some, the experience of the abyss of evil is a prerequisite for art. George Bataille places evil and art in close proximity, as two forces that oppose a lawful world of rational calculation. He perceives children as beings committed to evil, rebelling against an adult world of inhibiting conventions. The Divine exaltation as a transformative insurrection of Evil against Good, inviting us to break with order, to escape normalization and to deviate from the script.
