Um Século e Tanto, 130 Anos National Geographic

Until 27/09/2020

9 €

National Geographic has explored the planet for over 130 years and is distinguished by challenging, protecting and inspiring humanity to go beyond. It all started in 1888 with an invitation, which brought together the 33 founders of the National Geographic Society in Washington D.C. Among them geologists and cartographers, bankers and lawyers, scientists and military leaders began to delineate the purpose of the organisation. Everyone believed that science coupled with a clearer perception of our world would have the power to change it, improving it. With neither staff nor headquarters, the National Geographic Society began charting new routes, discovering new cultures and going beyond. We celebrate Alexander Graham Bell, Amelia Earheart, Alexander Graham Bell, Robert A. Bartlett, Richard E. Byrd, Barry Bishop, Jane Goodall, Sylvia Earle, Dian Fossey, Jacques Cousteau, Robert E. Peary, and so other big names in the National Geographic’s history. To share the expeditions, discoveries and scope, the National Geographic magazine was created in 1888. Its first edition was sent to an exclusive list of 200 members. In 2015, the National Geographic Partners was founded and its platform reaches over 450 million people, 43 languages, in 172 countries every month. The will of our 33 founders was fulfilled. We reached the four corners of the earth and went further. 131 years later, we continue to point our lenses at the most inhospitable places and the harshest realities of our planet, we continue to pursue big questions and challenge thoughts once accepted, we continue to protect and inspire humanity to go beyond. But none of this would be possible without your contribution. Thanks to you we have already awarded over 14,000 research grants, supporting ambitious projects in the areas of science, exploration and conservation. When you read, watch, buy or travel with us, you are supporting the work of our scientists, explorers and educators around the world. Because of you, our cause exists. Thank you for helping us contribute to a more sustainable planet.

Mitos Adiados

Until 01/11/2020

We see the Douro through the eyes of pioneering photographers: the magnificence of the terraces descending in gentle waves to the river, the bridges and tunnels by Emílio Biel, the work of the vineyard and the grape harvest of his apprentice, Domingos Alvão, the mimosas or the almond trees in bloom of the Estado Novo tourism. When the colour arrived, the overlapping hues of solstices’ gold and the old reds. This was and is the mythical Douro, with rabelos boats sailed by sailors, descending in a queue to the pier, the barrels towards the warehouses of Gaia. This Douro remains on postcards and advertising pamphlets. Carlos Cardoso, year after year, rebuilt today's Douro, maintaining the reality of its permanencies and changes, in black and white, between the memory of the images and their meaning, which only the contrast of shadow and light can make it clearer. Almost immutable in the time of the Ages, the ancient rocks, the granite of the Iberian massif, the shale of its torrid crushing. The shale blades challenged men and forged the destiny of the vineyard, they are the matrix of the territory. The photographer shows us his power, on the paths, in the blockades, on the ground of almond trees and vineyards, but also the raw material for his direct use and, here and there, the failure of the rock in the face of vegetation or the sign of permanence depending on the divine. On this matrix basis, the men produced the terraces according to their needs, then the levels according to the machines. The civilization of communication appropriates the Douro from the railway and explodes with the road. The landscape is made with iron beams, concrete and reinforced concrete spirals, in an old and new figure. To clarify this, there are no baskets for transporting grapes and protecting glass: the road culture is also that of plastic and ephemeral. So, because it is a photographic look, a new collection of images turns abandonment, neglect and discouragement into beautiful images of remains, of impure signs of pure longing. A visible unity is defined between the gaps in the shale blades, in their illusory solidity and the constructions that speak of the technical levels of man's culture. Both crumble, cover themselves with weeds, tear under the vital impulse of the trees: both speak of a past and a changing present. The shale layers dismantle like the railway tracks, defining new layers of ground. The abandoned stations, created to assert their Portuguese nature, are invaded by a thicket and desolation. Sometimes the two worlds of the old recent and the new intersect, in the geometry of the equipment, but always, always the greatest geometry are the mountains that reduce the scar the road that tears them. This built, marked and suffered Douro is doomed to be a dazzle. The matrix undulating of the mountains is deepened with concentric lines and the very white verticals of the levels; the precipices, the starry shales of gleams, the royal road of the river became systematic appropriations of man. But a viewpoint high above, a repainted bench to rest, the quintas (estates) multiplying the quality of the wine are other responses to what Nature offers or denies: Nature is indifferent to man, indifferent to itself, as a concept. The tension between the critical spirit and the longing or the search for beauty are things of man. This is what these images are about.

Castro

Until 12/09/2020

Let's start over, carefully. We are in no hurry, we miss you. And we have a public thanks to make. Let's start over with those who love us and those who have done us good. “Caring when everything is good throws the sadness away”, we hear in Castro. In early July, we will return to the performances that the pandemic has suspended. Together again! Let's start over, with joy and safety. "Live joyfully, Castro, live safely, throw your fears away." Castro (1598) by the poet António Ferreira, marks the first incursion of Nuno Cardoso into a canon piece of Portuguese theatre, Portugal’s first classical tragedy. He intends to inhabit this literary fiction, which itself offers a particular version of the historical drama / legend / myth of star-crossed lovers Pedro and Inês, making us “see with other eyes”, revealing to it the intrinsic modernity and density, veiled by the language’s poetry and by utterance. An immense stage-house-country, a kind of giant model of the spaces of action, a primordial and claustrophobic family cell, confront us with the tangible intimacy of characters that are in thrall to themselves and their intransigence. In Castro, like in Danton’s Death, the question of utopia (of love, as well as of revolution) is crucial. It is his dark reverse that is exposed here: love / desire and power as vice and chaos, as a prerogative, impunity and arrogance, as blindness that “tarnishes the brilliant rays of the ancient glory”. And how this tarnishing impairs the decision and replicates itself, tainting the family’s fabric with blood and revenge, in a peculiar dislocation of Castro’s focal point from Inês, and from the reason of State as fiction and morals, to Pedro, in his mirror-like relationship with his father, King Afonso IV. "What star was that so dark?"

From the whirling exercise of the past, one wants to get to "a floating cloud of affections", a misty landscape from which bodies, dispersed voices, pulsating materials that claim new existences emergence. That is, usually instead of "Karma" they use expressions like "you should die you son of a bit**", or "one day who will have a lump is your mother, you mother fuc***!" but you get the picture. After selling-out theatres from the north to the south of the country in 2019 with "Ódio de Estimação", it is now the turn of "Karma", his 4th stand-up comedy solo show, a show where for 1h30, between other treats, he will reveal all the good and bad things that have happened to him for being such a good person.

Quinteto de Bruckner

Often dubbed monumental, profound, and even mystical, Bruckner's symphonic catalogue is one of the most celebrated in the history of Western music. Much less well known are his rare compositions for chamber music, of which the Quintet in F major stands out unquestionably. Guided by Helena Marinho´s comments, we will learn the details of this score that, despite being written for a chamber music formation, managed, to mirror the grandeur and depth of the composer's symphonic music. So much so that it gave rise to different transcriptions, including the version for string orchestra that will be presented in this concert

Sopa de Pedra

13/09/2020

Sopa de Pedra is a female vocal collective dedicated to a capella singing of traditional roots, born in Porto at the hands of a group of young people with different origins. While not neglecting original songs and traditional music from other countries, they bring to Associação Movimento Terra Solta in Campanhã, a repertoire that can range from Miranda do Douro's songs from Trás-os-Montes to Azorean ballads, from the cantigas de adufeiras of Beira Baixa to the cante alentejano, with room for singer-songwriters like Zeca Afonso, José Mário Branco, João Loio or Amélia Muge.

A.N.T.Í.G.O.N.A.

Until 19/09/2020

5 €

A.N.T.Í.G.O.N.A. with text and staging by Gonçalo Amorim, is the trail of many and diverse texts written around Antigone (rewritings, essays, approximations) - especially those by George Steiner, Judith Butler, Slavoj Žižek and María Zambrano, but also those by Sara Uribe, Eduarda Dionísio, Júlio Dantas, Jean Anouilh or António Pedro. This polysemic nature, strengthened by the creative collaboration of a multidisciplinary team of artists, is at the basis of this performance by Teatro Experimental do Porto for a new take on the Sophocles' play. At a time when the issues of democracy, citizenship, justice and human rights are urgently reappearing on the agenda, a revival of this universal story is vital. with A.N.T.Í.G.O.N.A., we return to nodal dilemmas, between order an peace, tradition and brotherly love, authoritarianism and individuality. We return to Creon and Antigone, opposing (and equally intransigent) voices that challenge us. And if our empathy with Antigone is obvious, what a strange unanimity this is, when History shows that we have often chosen to side with Creon. The polysemy of A.N.T.Í.G.O.N.A. provides a broad questioning of these themes, "mustering courage and deepening the empathy".

A vida vai engolir-vos

Until 19/09/2020

9 €

A 10-hour performance, in wich we can watch Chekhov's four main plays: The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard. The play was meant to be performed at night and to end at daybreak - making dawn the main character. Dawn is the future. What will be! In all these plays we are confronted with a question that haunted Chekhov: what will humanity be like in the future? A question that in these times of uncertainty and fear seems to haunt each and every one of us. Through the dissatisfaction and powerlessness of the characters enable us to think about how absurd our life is and how to change it. This is a performance about change. And change is on what we want to work: the shift from old to new, the failure of old practices, the liberation from old truths. In his work, Chekhov described the life of certain strata of the petty bourgeoisie of his time, disoriented and depressed people, beset by the collapse of a decaying society, looking at the vices and ambiguities of intellectuals torn between the will to transform reality and their inability to act vis-à-vis that society. - Tónan Quito

A vida vai engolir-vos | Part 2

Until 19/09/2020

10 €

Anton Chekhov is going to swallow us up for almost ten hours. The long-length theatre returns to the city, a theatre of duration and resistance, but also of sharing and itinerancy. A Vida Vai Engolir-vos - a marathon-show that calls for the biggest plays of checkhov's repertoire - is divided into two parts that are alternately performed on the stages of Teatro Nacional São João and Teatro Rivoli. Tónan Quito is the perpetrator of this daring scenic adventure, taking us through, almost in a single breath, the plays The Seagull, Uncle Vanya Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard, with which the Russian playwright who blazed new trails for western theatre, blurring the lines between serious and light-hearted, comedy and tragedy. In all of these plays, Chekhov confronts us with a question that has always haunted him: what will humanity be like in the future? A question that has gained a renewed urgency, now that we live in times of fear and uncertainty. "Change" is the key word of A Vida Vai Engolir-vos, stresses the director: "The shift from old to new, the failure of old practices, the liberation from old truths"...

Piano em Concerto

18/09/2020

7.5 €

Among Mozart's 27 concerto for piano and orchestra, Concerto nº 20, in D minor, is the best known with the greatest dramatic impact. It was written at the height of his career as a composer, in 1785, and he himself premiered it at the piano, achieving instant success. The originality of the piece made it a landmark of concertante writing, giving a new glow to the possible dialogues between the piano and the orchestra. Beethoven was strongly influenced by these ideas and took them even further. He also intended to give a role to the soloist that went beyond the confrontation with the orchestra, and his Concerto nº3 turns out to be especially revolutionary in terms of dramatic intensity and scale. The person invited to direct and perform these iconic pieces with Orquestra Sinfónica is David Fray, a prestigious French pianist who won over the audience from Porto last year, when he debuted in this hall.

Denis Kozhukhin

19/09/2020

7.5 €

Russian pianist Denis Kozhukhin won the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels exactly a decade ago, when he was 23 years old and already a winner of the Leeds International Piano Competition. One of the most impressive pianists of his generation, he performs regularly at the main concert halls in the world, alongside prestigious conductors, and orchestras. His first album, recorded for Pentatone with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, was immediately Gramophone Editor's Choice and Record of the Month in several publications. For his debut recital at Casa da Música, Denis Kozhukhin brings a programme focused on music for youth, including Schumann's Scenes from Childhood - a set of memories that an adult would have from his own childhood. The recital ends with Ravel and his interpretation of the atmosphere of 19th century's ballrooms, in an exquisite waltz which, in its version for solo piano is considered one of the most transcendent pieces in the repertoire.

ERikm

19/09/2020

eRikm and FM Einheit, two of the greatest figures in experimental music, meet for an innovative show in Cultura em Expansão. French improviser, composer and visual artist, eRikm focuses his work on exploring the record player as a musical instrument. With a unique and deeply physical approach, he achieved a virtuoso status with this instrument, contributing decisively to the development of a rich and varied experimental language. At his side will be FM Einheit, percussionist and inventor of instruments recognised for his work with the Einsturzende Neubauten group. Equipped with a drill, metal sheets, bricks and coiled springs, it appears as a complement that is both improbable and surprisingly appealing. A concert that promises to not leave anyone indifferent. Banana - Papaia ao Vivo

19/09/2020

13 €

It is an incredible combination of a banana and a papaya making it a new fruit. Very similar to what has already happened in other animals such as Zebroid (Zebra + Horse), Feral Hog (boar + hog) or Galeta (cat + butterfly). The ancient Greeks (those who wore flip flop sandals) said that banana-papaya have the magical property of knowing differently depending on the person who devours it. For centuries, people thought it to be a myth because it is nowhere to be seen outside the internet - but they will be able to attest that it is real because this exotic fruit will travel around the country, live and in colour.

Choral Beethoven

20/09/2020

7.5 €

The debut of conductor Nils Schweckendiek (Artistic Director of the Helsinki Chamber Choir) ahead of Coro Casa da Música takes place in an evening entirely dedicated to Ludwig van Beethoven, as part of the composer's 250th birthday celebrations. Written in record time, Choral Fantasy combines different musical forces: orchestra, voices and piano. In tonight's performance, the choir is joined by a string quartet and Anna Kuvaja, a Finnish pianist who won five stars from the BBC Music Magazine right after releasing her first solo album. Also noteworthy is the contemporary approach to the Scherzo of the Ninth Symphony, by Manuel Hidalgo. Being an exclusively instrumental piece in its original version, the choral transcription of the Spanish composer is a challenge for the singers and an incredible surprise for the listeners.

The Leopard

22/09/2020

It is one of the highest moments of Luchino Visconti's work, a nostalgic, dramatic and opulent recreation of the tumultuous years of Italian Unification. The aristocracy were losing its power and the rebels, headed by Garibaldi, were fighting for a democratic Italy. Burt Lancaster plays the Prince of Salina in a fabulous way, an aging man who observes the decay of his culture and fortune in the face of the rise of a new generation, represented by his upstart nephew (Alain Delon) and his beautiful bride (Claudia Cardinale). Adapted from the novel of the same name by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, The Leopard addresses the topic of the end of an era and the birth of another, with agreement solutions and the complicity of power with the old ruling classes. Hence, the famous phrase "if you want everything to stay the same, things will have to change". The film will be screened in its complete and uncut version, in a magnificent restored digital copy. Martin Scorsese, responsible for the restored version, stated when he presented it at the Cannes festival: “I live with this movie every day of my life.”

Anna Paliwoda and Pedro Costa

22/09/2020

7.5 €

The sonata for piano and violin has been cultivated by countless composers throughout history. But Beethoven was not just another one: he knew both instruments well and put them at the service of new expressive possibilities, in order to meet his artistic ideal. The basis could be both the elegance of sonatas aimed at amateurs and the fusion between virtuosity and lyricism of more demanding works. Pianist Pedro Costa is the winner of competitions such as Concurso de Interpretação do Estoril, the Louis Spohr Competition for Lied Accompaniment (Germany) and the New Tenuto Competition (Belgium). In this recital, he is joined by the Polish violinist Anna Paliwoda, section leader of the second violins of Orquestra Gulbenkian and recent winner of Concurso de Interpretação do Estoril.

Por um fio

Until 26/09/2020

In a circus performance, two aerial acrobats continuously look for balance between two bodies, using a loose rope with two ends at a heigh of 7 meters. That rope, that unstable and unsteady string, changes the audience's perception concerning the bodies on stage. Our start point is that rope wich hangs the need for something else besides a simple connection. We depend upon this rope that leaves us hanging and secures us. That ties us up, but holds us. Every action triggers a cosequence in the state of the other, and it is that linkage that forces us to trust one another.

NU

25/09/2020

NU emerges from the clash between rock and the dense industrial universe. Their sound has a rough, mechanical pulse that, combined with literature and poetry, propels a performing and image-creating attitude. They were born in 2016, in Santo Tirso and, after two EP's, 2020 witnesses the release of their debut album, Diferentes Formas da Mesma Areira Morta, wich was recorded live. Guided by passages from writer Thomas Pynchon, the voice that echoes on the three tracks of the album conveys the loss of humanity, technological alienation, fear, loneliness, psychosis and the fierce and widespread competition that boost the atmosphere of decay that hangs over Western civilization. Or, in the words of Pynchon, "a world increasingly on a collision course with the inanimate". The soundscapes arise from the clash between this same world and the ordinary individual, an inner collapse of meaning and a silent invasion of emptiness.

In Turma de 95 (Class of 95), a trivial group school photo from 25 years ago plays dramaturgically as a powerful time machine. Using as starting point previous interviews and a documentary theatre convention, the stage director creates in Turma de 95 a personal portrait of a generation grappling with the expectation and pains of adolescence, in a Portugal that was undergoing an economic expansion and opening itself to Europe.
