Spontaneous and popular fair where you can buy birds, food and cages. Even if you do not want to buy anything, you can enjoy the singing birds, their colour and the liveliness of the fair. When passing through the fair, one must take a look at the breath-taking view of the Douro River and its bridges.
The exhibition marks the 30 years of the Foundation and the 20th anniversary of Museu de Serralves, presenting the programme of the Performing Arts Service between 1999 and today. It was born and developed through compromises between seemingly irreconcilable objectives: on the one hand, the need to present concrete data (names, dates, images) that showed where, how and when certain artists performed, and mirrored the pioneering character of the importance given to the performing arts by Serralves; on the other hand, it translates what seems to immediately distinguish these arts: the implication of the spectator, the eminently collaborative spirit, the "here and now" as opposed to "this was". The compromises included by putting on display documentation and letting its visitors know who has performed in Serralves (and when, how and where), while presenting elements that evoked the “here and now.” The documentation was incorporated through a process of collaboration: once the programmers Cristina Grande and Pedro Rocha selected the images and words that best illustrated the last twenty years of their programming (between stage photography and graphic materials that announced and accompanied the activities), it was commissioned to a graphic designer, Luís Teixeira, to create a book that would never be published, whose pages would be exclusively presented on the walls of Biblioteca de Serralves, along with the recordings of shows and props to which these programmers considered to be of special importance. At the same time, it was decided to occupy a considerable area of the library’s mezzanine with an object that would immediately evoke the idea of theatre and could "trigger" the viewer: a small stage waiting to be occupied. The visitor can and should sit down to read (programming texts, key books to understand the performing arts today) and, most importantly, to hear testimonials and memories of spectacles written by people especially attentive to Serralves' performing arts programming - between artists, musicians, writers and current or former directors and programmers of theatres and music and performance festivals - and then read by two actors. These testimonies came to reconcile the irreconcilable: the memories of certain shows, or of concerts and performances - necessarily subjective, incomplete, fragmentary - constitute the necessary counterpoint to data, dates, chronologies, documentation. It is largely thanks to them that this exhibition is not just about "what it was"; it is also now, and it is also here.
Igor Stravinsky’s choreographic pieces played a crucial role in the evolution of musical languages at concert halls, especially the trilogy created between 1910-1913 for the famous company Ballets Russes. The Firebird was the first of these ballets and, right in its premiere, it achieved a success that lasts to this day, attracting every audience with contagious melodies and brilliant orchestrations. Based on Russian folk tales, it tells a story full of magic. In this commented concert, we will learn not only the narrative behind the piece, but also analyse the score and see, for example, how the composer portrays, by using contrasting sounds, the human aspects and fantastic elements of the libretto.
After the amazing success of the series “o resto da tua vida”, which has more than half a million views per episode, Carlos Coutinho Vilhena, comedian, and João André, actor, come together to take to the stage “O Resto da tua vida ao vivo”. The so cherished duo, who brought for the first time to YouTube a documentary where reality and fiction confuse the audiences and the media, challenges their followers to leave the comfort of a screen for a theatre hall. “O resto da tua vida, ao vivo”, is based on a dialogue between João André and Carlos Coutinho Vilhena in which the two discuss about Theatre and Stand-Up comedy, always giving the final verdict to the audiences. What do Theatre and Stand-Up comedy have in common and where do the two touch and merge deeply? What, in fact, is the difference between the two? This show aims to offer the audiences timeless texts that cover authors ranging from Shakespeare to Karl Valentin, giving them the version of an actor and a comedian. “O resto da tua vida, ao vivo” intends, above all, to elevate all the artistic and social layers that are the main focus of the series, to make them live and transmit them to a young audience that , precisely, represents the future.
“Os Suspeitos” is honoured to present for the first time in Portugal the American dark electro pop band Poliça. Their debut album 'Give You The Ghost' was considered one of the best of 2012. They toured with bands like XX and Bon Iver. In fact, the band is a 'protégé' of Bon Iver to the point that they released the duet 'Tiff'. They bring with them their 4th and new album 'When We Stay Alive' after ‘United Crushers’ from 2016 and the collaborative album with the European orchestral collective s t a r g a z e ‘Music For The Long Emergency’. The album was mixed by Jim Eno of Spoons, and written by Channy Leaneagh during a recovery after a serious fall from a roof that left her with limited mobility for months. The album title reflects not only her physical recovery, but also reclaiming her identity. The European tour ends in Porto at Casa da Música. An unmissable concert.
They are seven, like the days of Creation. Seven dancers or physical incarnations of an oneirism under control. Seven bodies out of the bitter limbo of an awake, trance-like and conditioned sleep. That of their demiurge is also on stage, Tânia Carvalho, at the piano. The light is called "day" and the darkness "night". "Onironaut" is the name of this play. A name used by travellers who are able to control their dreams, to shape, for themselves, a world of images and senses. Tânia Carvalho is one of them. A creator who invites us, witness to her lucid journey. A clairvoyant. Spectators of those pieces of dream that are sometimes as dark as those of a choreographer who has long sought to force out her nightmares. To twist the darkness’ neck. To strangle the real and the pranks that her spirit plays on her. Tânia Carvalho creates moving, chilling paintings, which jolt like some disturbing dreams from which one comes out confused and shaking. Always inspired. Awakened.

Surrogate Cities is a work with a wide artistic spectrum that does not fit in simple drawers or labels - just like its author, Heiner Goebbels. The theme is the city, with its complexities, people and buildings, stories and noises. And the metaphor of the city is nothing less than the orchestra, supplemented with electronic resources that translate the ever-changing mechanics and architecture of the city. This production has the stage direction of the composer himself, who will be at Casa da Música accompanying the Portuguese debut of a fundamental piece of the last decades. On stage, jazz singer Jocelyn B. Smith and experimentalist singer David Moss, both with a deep knowledge of the piece and Goebbels' favourite soloists. Based on texts by Hugo Hamilton, Paul Auster and Heiner Müller, the image and sound of the modern city is born, with all its fascinating contradictions. “Surrogate Cities is a radical exercise that breaks musical boundaries and deserves to be heard” Andy Hamilton
Bossarenova is a transatlantic trio that brings together Paula Morelenbaum, the great voice of Bossa Nova from Brasil, and two exceptional German musicians: the renowned pianist Ralf Schmid and Joo Kraus, one of the best European trumpeters today. The return to Portugal takes place within the scope of the European tour to present "Atlântico", their most recent album and a new milestone in this virtuous alliance, a sort of timeless symphony that translates all the beauty and charm of Brazilian music and its composers. They celebrate João Donato, revere Edu Lobo and the famous partnership between Ivan Lins and Vítor Martins, bring the poetry of Egberto Gismonti to the stage, remember Caetano Veloso and honour Tom Jobim, excellent conductor who invited Paula Morelenbaum to join Banda Nova and with whom she worked for ten years. “Atlântico” is proof of the incredible versatility of these artists and their ability to crear a unique sound in the reinterpretation of established pieces. The trio dives with acccuracy and security in this ocean of sounds.
Singer, guitarist, songwriter and performer, Lula Pena is one of the most exciting musical figures in Portugal today. With a fascinating approach to global folk song, her unique artistic expression embraces different traditions of music, sound and poetry. At Igreja S. Pedro de Miragaia she presents her new album Archivo Pittoresco, released internationally in 2019, where she composed and juxtaposed a repertoire that she improved over time, in a very unique style that features diverse musicalities and languages. With lyrics and poems by writers like Manos Hadjidakis, Violeta Parra, the Belgian surrealist Scutenaire, and of her own creation, Lula sings in Portuguese, French, English, Spanish, Greek and Italian seeking a “tradition on a universal scale”.

It is RUI XARÁ's third solo and takes up the subjects that over the course of these 21 years of career have been part of the imagination of the comedian from Porto, now seen from a more mature perspective but marked by the controversial times we live in. Aesthetic, corrosive, assertive. They could be terms to define a good whiskey. They are also terms that define Rui Xará. CALLBACK is a Stand-Up Comedy show with a strong social concern: making the audience laugh. Don't miss this show that is one of the most awaited comedy shows in recent years!
Whoever passes by from 10 am to 7 pm will find a wide range of items: handicrafts, clothing, antiques, organic products, books, toys, and more. As it takes place outdoors, this market always depends upon favourable weather conditions.

Magic and colour are part of a performance dedicated to the little ones, but which will also delight the older ones.
Rosemary’s Baby is Polanski's first work shot in the United States and one of the filmmaker's masterpieces. It has received several awards, including the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, awarded to Ruth Gordon. Adaptation of Ira Levin's Rosemary’s Baby horror novel, it’s a story about nightmare, paranoia, the occult, religion. It would become one of the most influential works of American cinema in the 1960s. Rosemary (played by an angelic and fragile Mia Farrow) is the bearer of the “son of the Devil”, which her husband, Guy (John Cassavetes), had sold in exchange of career success. Set in an apartment in the famous Dakota building in New York, it will become crucial as the story unfolds, highlighting the lack of space that the protagonist faces as she loses her independence (Polanski will again resort to an apartment’s smallness to express the phobia in The Tenant, 1976).
Formed in 2012 by four young talented percussionists, the Pulsat Percussion Group has excelled in interpreting a diverse repertoire ranging from John Cage and Steve Reich to the current music by Portuguese composers such as Luís Tinoco, Igor Silva, and many others. Nocturne by Hungarian composer Mátyás Wettl, stems from a simple everyday action like turning the light on and off, resulting in a piece that explores sound and visual components simultaneously. Acclaimed for his timbre explorations and multimedia collaborations, Christopher Cerrone was inspired by American poet G. C. Waldrep to write a cycle of songs that seeks to find a balance between two distinct forces, voice and percussion. The programme also includes the world premiere of a work by Daniel Martinho, a young Portuguese composer who has been making a name for himself internationally.
Adapted from the novel with the same name by Anthony Burgess, A Clockwork Orange is a dystopian tale set in the near future, where gangs of teenagers give free rein to their instincts and unbridled brutality, to the sound of Beethoven and "Singin' in the Rain". At the time of its premiere, the film was cut by censorship in several countries, but over the years it achieved a cult status. It is a political parable that deals with real social, political (the “control” of individuals by the “Government”) and economic issues, with images typical of the aesthetics of the seventies and fabulous interpretations. Kubrick, whom Orson Welles called “a giant”, among the younger generation's filmmakers, whom Martin Scorsese said was “a genius”, with enormous talent and ability to tell stories, resumes, in A Clockwork Orange, as Enrico wrote Ghezzi, more “human” concerns (violence, individual freedom), “showing us all the ways in which the cinematographic show works: over the eye, over the ear”. (Stanley Kubrick, ed. Il Castoro).
The phrase by the 19th-century French poet Rimbaud "Je est un autre" ("I is another") sets the tone for the conference that, together with exhibitions, performances and concerts, will make the 3rd edition of the Vivarium Festival. The performance arts, thought and technology festival will occupy four spaces in the city (Maus Hábitos, Passos Manuel, Armazém 22 and Reitoria da Universidade do Porto) to relaunch the reflection on the influence of technology in the arts and in the human being, throughout three days of intense programme. One of the big events will be the conference ""Je est un autre, instintos e instituições na era da tecnologia", which takes Rimbaud's phrase as its theme, who, in a letter to the also poet Paul Demeny, discussed the paradox of "me" and the "other" in the sense that someone can be other than himself from the point of view of artistic creation. In his view, the artist does not own his creation as it is it which creates itself under the eye of the artist but independently of him. The Vivarium conference will feature as speakers, French visual artist Laurent Goldring, Philosophy researcher Ana Falcato, full professor Ernesto Costa, artist Leonel Moura and judge Alexandre Oliveira. Meanwhile, exhibitions by North American Mark America, French Laurent Goldring and Portuguese Tiago Rorke are planned, in collaboration with the joint project MILL - Makers in little Lisbon. On the musical side, the programme includes performances by American multi-instrumentalist Kelly Moran, British project Lil Data, the Portuguese Osso Vaidoso and the duo Telectu. There will also be performances by: the performer and digital poetess Yatta (originally from Sierra Leone and living in the United States), French Franck Vigroux and Slovak dancer and choreographer Eva Klimackova, Laurent Goldring and Portuguese dancer and choreographer Gustavo Monteiro.
At the age of 18, just before trying his luck in Vienna, Mozart wrote Symphony No. 29, an energetic and luminous work that is probably the most popular of all his youth symphonies. The autograph score presents his proverbial writing that is confident, clean and without hesitation, confirming the famous myth that the composer always envisioned the whole piece in his mind before committing them to paper. Mozart's influence on generations of composers shortly after his death and even today is enormous. One of those composers was Richard Strauss, who idolized him and was a renowned interpreter of his work in his conductor capacity. But Strauss was also the quintessential author of symphonic poems, reaching the highest exponent of refinement in the genre. A Hero's Life represents his own experiences as a man and as an artist.
These days, the Theatre is physically closed to us, but it is precisely during this time that we intend to celebrate it with you. Next Friday, March 27th, World Theatre Day is celebrated and Teatro Nacional São João wants to experience it with a programme all throughout the week. On this festive day, we return virtually to Teatro Nacional São João for a guided tour by those who know and love this National Monument - as suggested by Visita, by director Luís Porto; in the evening, we will show Castro, an essential tragedy in Portuguese theatre staged by Nuno Cardoso. The day before, our almost in-house cast gives voice to the very peculiar Coro of this piece by António Ferreira. Our viewers will be able to follow these activities through an online broadcast, here, and on our Facebook and Instagram pages. And, that's not all. Throughout the week, we will also make available the irreverent folly of the four plays that comprise the Ubu trilogy by Alfred Jarry, in free eBooks downloads, as well as the complete collection of our Reading Manuals. Day by day, on the website and on social media, we will continue to recall a past performance of Teatro Nacional São João, putting those who follow us speaking about Theatre.
It is already beginning to be a tradition of Sábados à Conversa to have a Gastronomic Society showing us and let us taste a delicacy of our Portuguese gastronomic culture. This Saturday, March 28th, at 11am, the Confraria Gastronómica dos Velhotes de Valadares will come to show us this regional sweet. We heard that this sweet (Velhotes) will be prepared live, so we don't want to miss this event. Will you? End the month in the best way possible, with us!
The Rancho de Cantadores de Aldeia Nova de São Bento, created 33 years ago, is heir to a long tradition long recognised in the region as a “land of good singers”. The group, aged between 16 and 93 years old, represents splendidly the Cante Alentejano - designated in 2014 Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO - and conceived a concert that is nothing short of a celebration, sharing the stage with very special guests: António Zambujo, Jorge Benvinda, Miguel Araújo and Pedro Mestre.
Forever King of Pop is back in Portugal with new songs and choreographies to mark the 10th anniversary of the farewell to the “King of Pop”, which took place on 25 June 2009. Endorsed by Joseph Jackson, father of the musician and songwriter, and by his older brothers Jermaine and La Toya Jackson, Forever King of Pop has been touring countries such as France, Mexico, Spain and Germany, carrying with it a leading musical legacy, which is still sung and danced today, and which many will never forget, of Michael Jackson. “Bad”, “Dirty Diana”, “Thriller”, “Earth Song” and “Smooth Criminal” are some of the songs that Forever King of Pop revives and rekindles, mesmerizing the audience with rhythmic choreographies, a memorable wardrobe and many “moonwalks”, the singer's signature dance. A project choreographed with rigour and dedication, which Michael Jackson's own parent referred to as "too good to be true" and where "it seemed like I was seeing him up there". The main role is played by Alex Blanco, a 23-year-old London artist who started to imitate the artist in the year of his death and whose videos on YouTube became so well-known that they made him a real star, with the “Human Nature” on stage. Forever King of Pop, remembering Michael Jackson.
Richard Strauss is the quintessential symphonic poet, the composer who reached the highest exponent of refinement in this genre. A hero’s life is his eighth symphonic poem and it was a great success when it premiered, in 1899. The following testimony resulted from one of its performances, “I see people trembling and almost rise in certain passages. In the end, while the audience is applauding and the flowers are brought to the stage, there is the sound of the trumpets and the women wave their handkerchiefs.” The piece is a self-portrait of the composer and revisits famous themes from his oeuvre, taken from symphonic poems and songs. With the comments of Mário Azevedo and with the excerpts played by the orchestra, we will understand a bit more how Richard Strauss portrayed himself through this fabulous music.
After performing and debuting in our country in 2017, in the opening act of Epica. The Franco-Tunisians Myrath are now embarking on a new tour with around thirty concerts across Europe and it will end precisely in Portugal on March 29th at Hard Club. With their incredibly personal, epic and beautiful progressive metal, with oriental fusion, MYRATH established themselves slowly but surely as one of the most fascinating bands in the current international metal scene. After months of hard work, the Tunisian quintet is ready to present its long-awaited fifth masterpiece, “Shehili”. Keeping its progressive influences, “Shehili” mixes the Arab melodies with the groove patterns of “Tales Of The Sands” (2011), MYRATH's third innovative album, with well-worked arrangements and complex structures from their previous great work, “Legacy” (2016). "Shehili", is an enigmatic and poetic Arabic word, it is the name of an ancient wind from the dunes of the Sahara. The gentle caress of a breeze that whispers legends in the ear and opens the door to dreams... We have no choice but to listen to these beautiful melodies and let ourselves drift away! The opening act will be by the Swedes ELEINE, one of the most popular and unmissable metal bands in the current metal scene. Since their debut album in 2015, and the second year of the album "When The End", in 2018, which was number one in the Swedish sales charts.
