Álvaro Siza: in / discipline

19/09/2019

Name: Álvaro Siza Discipline: As little as possible This confessional note - once written by Álvaro Siza on the inner endpaper of one of his sketchbooks – was the starting point for this commemorative exhibition of the 20th anniversary of the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art. Álvaro Siza: in / discipline reveals to us the salutary disquiet and insubordination of his creative method which, forged at the cross-fertilization of knowledges, cultures, geographies, works and authors, has sustained, for more than six decades, a constant questioning of architecture from, simultaneously, what is inside and outside the discipline. Featuring thirty projects carried out between 1954 and 2019 (both built or unbuilt), the exhibition traces the professional trajectory of Álvaro Siza, since the period of his education to his full consolidation as an architect, through his readings, his sketchbooks and travel records, and the way his work was portrayed, photographically in seminal publications and verbally in personal statements by many of those contemporaries who have crossed paths with it over time.

9kg de Oxigénio

Until 16/02/2020

Galeria Municipal do Porto opens the exhibition "9kg de Oxigénio". The exhibition is the result from the challenge launched by Galeria Municipal do Porto to the project "Uma Certa Falta de Coerência" to develop an exercise that reflects on the relationship between independent curatorial practice, self-managed by artists, and an institutional exhibition context. In this sense, "Uma Certa Falta de Coerência", which has been developing its work independently since 2008, will present this exhibition in which it will "test the production policies and ways of understanding, taking as its starting point the exercise of survival under conditions adverse and subject to institutional oppression". "Uma Certa Falta de Coerência" will transfer the atmosphere of the small space it occupies on Rua dos Caldeireiros, where air breathability is often questioned, and will feature works by artists who, over the past few years, have collaborated with the project: Babi Badalov, Daniel Barroca, António Bolota, Camilo Castelo Branco, Merlin Carpenter, Rolando Castellón, June Crespo, Luisa Cunha, Stephan Dillemuth, Loretta Fahrenholz, Pedro G. Romero, Dan Graham, Alisa Heil, Mike Kelley, Ruchama Noorda, Silvestre Pestana, Josephine Pryde and Xoan Torres.

Depois do Estouro

Until 16/02/2020

Galeria Municipal do Porto opens the exhibition "Depois do Estouro", curated by Tomás Abreu and results from the "Expo'98 no Porto" competition project. "Depois do Estouro" was selected by an independent jury of the Galeria Municipal do Porto’s artistic team, composed by Daniela Marinho, postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Arts and Cultural Studies at the University of Copenhagen, Miguel Ferrão, who directs with Eduardo Guerra the artistic project Musa paradisiaca, and Nuno Faria, artistic director of Museu da Cidade. This exposition arises from the effects that the socioeconomic and technological developments by the end of the last century had on contemporary culture and "proposes a reflection on paradoxes of their consequences, while challenging notions of time manipulation". It brings together a set of works, produced at the end of the last decade by 13 young artists who grew up in Portugal in the 1990s, which "focus on issues of humanity, physical space and time": Alice dos Reis, Francisco M. Gomes, Henrique Pavão, Hugo de Almeida Pinho, Igor Jesus, Jorge Jácome, Lucia Prancha, Mariana Rocha, Mariana Vilanova, Pedro Huet, Rodrigo Gomes, Sara Graça and Tomás Abreu.

Until 12/07/2020

The exhibition marks the 30 years of the Foundation and the 20th anniversary of Museu de Serralves, presenting the programme of the Performing Arts Service between 1999 and today. It was born and developed through compromises between seemingly irreconcilable objectives: on the one hand, the need to present concrete data (names, dates, images) that showed where, how and when certain artists performed, and mirrored the pioneering character of the importance given to the performing arts by Serralves; on the other hand, it translates what seems to immediately distinguish these arts: the implication of the spectator, the eminently collaborative spirit, the "here and now" as opposed to "this was". The compromises included by putting on display documentation and letting its visitors know who has performed in Serralves (and when, how and where), while presenting elements that evoked the “here and now.” The documentation was incorporated through a process of collaboration: once the programmers Cristina Grande and Pedro Rocha selected the images and words that best illustrated the last twenty years of their programming (between stage photography and graphic materials that announced and accompanied the activities), it was commissioned to a graphic designer, Luís Teixeira, to create a book that would never be published, whose pages would be exclusively presented on the walls of Biblioteca de Serralves, along with the recordings of shows and props to which these programmers considered to be of special importance. At the same time, it was decided to occupy a considerable area of the library’s mezzanine with an object that would immediately evoke the idea of theatre and could "trigger" the viewer: a small stage waiting to be occupied. The visitor can and should sit down to read (programming texts, key books to understand the performing arts today) and, most importantly, to hear testimonials and memories of spectacles written by people especially attentive to Serralves' performing arts programming - between artists, musicians, writers and current or former directors and programmers of theatres and music and performance festivals - and then read by two actors. These testimonies came to reconcile the irreconcilable: the memories of certain shows, or of concerts and performances - necessarily subjective, incomplete, fragmentary - constitute the necessary counterpoint to data, dates, chronologies, documentation. It is largely thanks to them that this exhibition is not just about "what it was"; it is also now, and it is also here.

Margem

Until 02/02/2020

10 €

Brecht said that margins are as "violent" as the violence of the "river that drags everything" because they confine it. Margin, directed by Victor Hugo Pontes, tell us of a similar violence, associated with young people at risk in the periphery of life, like the characters in Jorge Amado's Captains of the Sands (1937), a book that inspired him and was a “guide”, here deconstructed and reconstructed here by Joana Craveiro’s writing. The dialogue between Victor Hugo Pontes’ choreographic language and the book a second layer was laid, that of the life stories, collected in a previous research, of children living in institutions such as Casa Pia and Instituto Profissional do Terço, and also a third one, consisting of the memories and experiences of the performers themselves and the process of creating the show - all these layers interweave in the original text behind this performance. A cast of kids, aged from 14 to 20 years (plus a dancer and a professional actor) inhabit the stage-house-shelter, mattresses scattered across the floor, the (dreamed?) oasis of a palm tree, as a vital space for the preservation of oneself in a group, a family, even. Margem, a production midway between dance and documentary theatre, moved by an urgent and tribal soundtrack, is admittedly a "very political" work. Racism, sex, revolution and death also appear, but there is a vibrant energy running through Margem, and that energy persists and endures.

The Son of Joseph

01/02/2020

12 €

Vincent, a fifteen-year-old teenager, was lovingly raised by his mother, who always refused to reveal his father's name. Vincent then begins to search and discovers that his father is a Parisian, selfish and cynical publsiher, Oscar Pormenor. Vincent does not accept it. The painting that fills an entire wall in his room - a reproduction of Caravaggio's The Sacrifice of Isaac - inspires him do devise a plan of revenge, but it is in that moment that the encounter with Joseph will change both his life and that of his mother. Eugène Green's sixth feature film combines all the virtues of Green’s cinema - rigorous and "self-conscious" staging, classic erudition declined with "mystery", a hidden sense of humour that runs through and transfigures - in a story that begins in Paris, in the midst of "intellectuals" and "literary critics" (usual target of Green's harsh criticism), and ends by the coastline, in a bizarre (but as delicate as fun) evocation of the Nativity.

O Génio de Lopes-Graça

02/02/2020

10 €

The most important legacy of 20th-century Portuguese choral music belongs to Fernando Lopes-Graça, with an oeuvre in this field only comparable to that of the great polyphonists of the Renaissance. Two great categories divide this legacy: the original compositions and the harmonisation of regional songs, areas in which the composer left his extremely personal stamp, filled them with sounds that are immediately associated with his name. As a result of his field study in collecting traditional music, his compositions reflect an image of the roots of Portuguese music that is difficult to find in other composers. Focus of interest of maestro Paul Hillier from the first moment he took on the challenge of creating from scratch Coro Casa da Música, in 2009, Lopes Graça is the target of a monographic concert, entirely dedicated to his choral work, which will result in a record by Coro Casa da Música.

Seong-Jin Cho

05/02/2020

19 €

South Korean pianist Seong-Jin Cho embarked on a world-class career after winning the 17th International Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 2015, at just 21. An exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist, he performed a brilliant recital at the 2017 Piano Cycle at Casa da Música. The Six pieces op.118 by Brahms are a set truly remarkable for the diversity of environments they provide, highlighting the more lyrical side of the instrument. The polyphonic composition and the orchestral sounds distinguish César Franck's Prelude, Choral and Fugue, a masterpiece of the French repertoire. Before finishing the recital with a truly revolutionary composition that reveals all the genius of Franz Liszt, Sonata in B Minor, the pianist presents the most auspicious first piece by a composer, Sonata op.1 written in 1908 by Alban Berg. “Cho's mix of imagination, pacing, balance and control produced moments of spellbinding sonic art” The Arts Desk

U

Until 09/02/2020

10 €

U tells the epic journey of a very peculiar Ulysses, not the superhuman hero of Homer's Odyssey, but a huge white bear, a polar bear. Taking as starting-point Maria Alberta Menéres’ Ulisses, a children’s version of the Odyssey, stage director Joana Magalhães drew inspiration by the book’s opening line: “A tale never loses in the telling.” Thus, contrary to the univocal slant of the tale which glorifies the hero and his deeds, she decided to make it dialogue with a short story she had written, A Educação de Um Ditador (The Education of a Dictator). U is kidnapped by the inhabitants of a certain domestic-animal-ruled country, and he was educated according to democratic principles to become a dictator. Made a leader against his will, U escapes and sets off on a journey back to Ithaca, the land of savages, in search of his lost identity, but on arriving there he is once again welcomed as a messiah. U uses the wandering of its main character through a black and white world to question the concept of the hero and our lazy attachment to the notion of a saviour who will forgive us and save us from disaster. The real catastrophe, Penelope’s catastrophe, the planet Earth, continues to unfold, always waiting for salvation. Basically, U’s makes us think about democracy, as a collective and participatory project.

Urna

07/02/2020

7 €

"Urn" is a solo that reflects on the relationship between human beings and their social identity, on the overvaluation of consciousness and on the body as an objectified product. The inspiration came from the poem by Giulio Morello, Multa per inane videbis corpora, which mentions the De rerum natura, an invitation to become aware of the state of humankind: “Let us imagine an individual in motion / who at each step extracts from an urn / the instruction for the next step: / right left front back. // Let us imagine that millions of individuals / move in the same way, well: / what distinguishes us from gas bodies? / Perhaps the illusion of governing fate?” How is it that the culturally and socially informed individual is deconstructed, after entering the loop of his own blind convictions? Urna is an untapped opportunity, lost forever in a distant non-time. It is the loss of significant questions and the obsession for reassuring and ephemeral answers. Urna is what remains after curiosity, which becomes oppression, which gives way to the redundant cacophonic, which in turn gives way to the absurd, which gives way to emptiness, which gives way to new possibilities, which generate other curiosities. And so on forever. What is left is a loop; movements, words, symbols devoid of meaning, are repeated to the ridicule so that we can reflect on the urgency of reducing (or elevating?) the human being to the surrendered beast.

Passos no Escuro - The Room

07/02/2020

The cult movie "The Room", directed and performed by Tommy Wiseau and which is considered the "best worst movie ever made", will open the February edition of the "Passos no Escuro" cycle. With the theme "É mau? Ótimo!" (Is it bad? Good!), next month's programme starts like this with a film that has been regularly screened for 17 years and always with a legion of fans actively participating: the audience dresses like the characters, throws plastic spoons at the stage and follows a series of rituals already well practiced. The screening at cinema Passos Manuel will be no different and will include the participation of Greg Sestero, one of the lead actors, who is also the writer of the book that documents all the adventures of movie making and that gave rise to the film of the same name, "The Disaster Artist" by James Franco. Greg Sestero is the host who prepared the entire programme of festivities that accompany the film, on February 7th. Before the screening, there will be a mini documentary on "The Room", a performance where the actor reads parts of the book / script and answers questions from the audience and explains the "rules" for viewing the film.

The Afro-Bahian rhythmic roots translated into the harmonization of jazz. This is the music suggestion of the multi-award-winning big band Letieres Leite & Orkestra Rumpilezz. His compositions are based on the keys and rhythmic drawings of the so-called Bahian Percussive Universe, with references to percussive associations such as Ilê Aiyê and Olodum, Sambas do Recôncavo and the sacred cult of Candomblé. It was the winner of the 28th Brazilian Music Award in the categories of best instrumental album, best instrumental group and best arranger. The compositions are by Letieres Leite, who explains: “The album talks about the moment of the arrival of free African people who were enslaved and brought to Salvador, but not with a submissive and tragic vision, but with an empowered perspective”. “One of the most intense showcases of Bahian artistic inspiration” Caetano Veloso

MDLSX

Until 15/02/2020

10 €

“I was born twice: I was first one thing, and then the other.” These are the opening words of MDLSX, a kaleidoscopic solo performance by Silvia Calderoni, staged by Enrico Casagrande and Daniela Nicolò, founders of the Italian company Motus. Intense and defying, it countians literary evocations from Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides, Orlando by Virginia Woolf, several texts by Pasolini, and seminal books on queer theory, such as Gender Trouble by Judith Butler, or Counter-sexual Manifesto by Paul B. Preciado. Using the power of her androgynous presence and a format reminiscent of a DJ/VJ set, Silvia Calderoni weaves these literary references with her biography, home videos and the pop music that influenced her, from The Smiths to Placebo, from Talking Heads to Vampire Weekend and The Dresden Dolls. Shattering the concepts of gender and narrative, MDLSX is a paean to the freedom of becoming and being an other, beyond any border or prejudice.

Blanck Mass

14/02/2020

7 €

Blanck Mass, Benjamin John Power's solo project, half of Fuck Buttons, is back in Portugal and has a confirmed stop at Rivoli’s Understage on February 14th, for the presentation of “Animated Violence Mild’. Released in 2019 via Sacred Bones, “Animated Violence Mild’ is, in the words of the British musician and producer, his most concise, direct and honest work to date. Loaded with bold experimentation, rhythmic intensity, explosive melodies and daring ferocity, the album is an amalgam of extreme emotions, which oscillate between the expression of existential fear and the beauty close to transcendence. A grief record, which arises from the reflection concerning grief, not only personally but also in a more global sense, of all of us, as a species, it is an unbridled anti-consumerism treaty, a declared criticism to humanity's self-inflicted fall, betrayal of the best instincts of our nature and the future of our own world. And like the sadness it communicates there, the eight tracks that comprise it are not at all linear, surprising the listener at every moment, among stylistic combinations so distinct and well executed that effortlessly go well beyond all the influences that shamelessly we recognize in him, becoming a moment not so much of exasperation but of pure catharsis.

Invicta.Música.Filmes

Until 18/02/2020

In a good movie session, before the arrival of sound films, the music was performed live. This experience is not only relived but also updated in the cine-concerts performed in the 8th edition of Invicta.Música.Filmes, with new music written for two recently restored silent films. J'Accuse, a pacifist film by French filmmaker Abel Gance, is accompanied by a soundtrack created by his compatriot Philippe Schoeller and will be premiered in Portugal, by Orquestra Sinfónica. A few days later, the Remix Ensemble and Digitópia present the result of the challenge that Casa da Música posed to the composer from Porto, Igor C. Silva, to create a score for a Portuguese silent film from 1927, the crime film O Táxi Nº 9297 by Reinaldo Ferreira, a journalist better known as Repórter X. The soundtracks of some of the best-known films in history are featured in the concert of Banda Sinfónica Portuguesa, including music by Nino Rota, Ennio Morricone and John Williams. The opening of the festival is a fascinating A Trip to the Moon through the lens of a pioneer of French cinema, Georges Méliès, a science fiction from 1902 also presented in a cine-concert with new music created here at Casa da Música by members of Digitópia.

J'Accuse

24 €

Released in 1919, the film J'Accuse gave international fame to filmmaker Abel Gance, a reference figure in silent French cinema. The montage includes scenes shot on the battlefield, placing the love plot in the context of World War I. Considered a pacifist film, it was recently recovered and gave rise to Philippe Schoeller's original soundtrack, commissioned as part of the celebrations of the centenary of the war. This is the opportunity to see a masterpiece of European silent cinema while the orchestra performs the new soundtrack live, which perfectly highlights the disturbing images of the film. “Led by Christian Schumann's fervent direction, J’accuse is a perfect marriage between music and cinema” Le Monde

The result is a surprising fusion of roots and modernity, tradition and innovation, translated into musical paintings capable of leading the audiences on new and exciting journeys.

O Filme do Repórter X

14 €

The strangulation of an actress by her ex-lover, in a taxi, shocked Lisbon society in 1926. In the newspapers, a so-called Repórter X published the results of his own investigation, denouncing the perpetrator of the crime. The journalist was Reinaldo Ferreira, the same man who shortly afterwards directed O Táxi Nº 9297, a crime film that became a classic of Portuguese silent cinema, inspired precisely by that crime. Made at the Invicta Film studios, in Porto, and premiered at Cinema Batalha in 1927, the film now has an original soundtrack, written especially for the Remix Ensemble and for this occasion by the composer from Porto, Igor C. Silva.

O Dia do Juízo

Stage director Cristina Carvalhal visited us in 2018 with the stage adaptation of Elizabeth Costello, a novel by J.M.Coetzee. Two years later, we will meet her again with a play by Ödön von Horváth. We could start by talking about this playwright by quoting a lapidary phrase: “I have attempted to be as disrespectful as possible towards stupidity and lies.” If we add to this brutality an abruptness for human insufficiencies and a corrosive sense of humour, we begin to grasp the dominant tone of the work of Horváth, a citizen of the Austro-Hungarian empire who settled in Berlin in the 1920s, to then reinvent the German-speaking popular theatre. Written in 1935-36, the intrigue of Judgment Day could easily be confused with a run-of-the-mill bourgeois drama, led by an unexpected “love” triangle. But the play acquires, as it progresses, the density of a parable on guilt and innocence, to question individual responsibility within the daily life of a community. The use of video pieces is one of the building-blocks of the show. The video done by the filmmaker Pedro Filipe Marques, will be instrumental in achieving the phantasmal dimension of guilt or, to put it another way, in the “materialisation” of the unusual presence from the “beyond”…

Hotel Europa - Os filhos do colonialismo

Until 22/02/2020

9 €

Marianne Hirsch defines in her book "The Generation of Postmemory" the concept of post-memory as the "relationship that the ‘generation after’ bears to the personal, collective and cultural trauma of those who came before – to experiences they ‘remember’ only by means of the stories, images and behaviours among which they grew up" (2012: 5). The performance "The children of colonialism" investigates the relationship between the generations that were born after 25 April 1974 and Portuguese colonialism and what memories were transmitted to them from that same past. This is a documentary theatre performance that works from an extensive and contrasting collection of testimonies, putting the interviewees themselves on stage to discuss their biographies and those of their parents, reflecting how the colonial past is reflected in Portugal and in today's Europe , as well as in movements that demand the decolonization of the history and thought of the ancient imperial countries.

Festa de Carnaval do Faroeste

24/02/2020

Carnaval do Mercado’s parties are already a ritual and, as usual, every year we challenge our visitors to disguise themselves according to a theme. Naturally, 2020 is no exception. This year, our venue will become a Old West city. Cowboys, cowgirls, undertakers, dangerous villains wanted by the Sheriff, among other characters, arrive at the “West’s gem” Bom Sucesso to, after crossing cactus and bales of straw, get inside through the “saloons” iconic doors and socialise at the bar by toasting to Carnival. Watch out for the gunslinger duels on the corridors! The icing on the cake will be Country Joe's performance, starting at 10 pm, on our stage.

I'm so Excited!

Until 28/02/2020

All of this is about the end of a relationship, the destruction of two bodies that love each other or that used to love or enjoyed the idea of loving each other, set in a party setting, on the birthday of one of the performers, which is also a theatre rehearsal. In a constant game of perversion and provocation - sometimes almost childish, a motionless body and body 2 (as if mirror figures of Hippolytus and Phaedra) allow themselves to be pieces of a game that is not entirely decipherable, in order to reach a settling of scores. This "fight" goes to a place of revenge, where one of the bodies will have to forget and (self)destroy completely, in order to achieve a certain purification and forgiveness. This purification is the state we are looking for: the search for an almost dependent and total love - this total surrender being an impossible condition speaking of us humans, and of individual machines, with their sole and own wills and desires. I intend, from this performance, to start a series of duets, in which I will work every year, in an atmosphere of intimacy, with an (female) performer, based on more or less specific guidelines, with the only condition of the team being only composed of me and that other person. Basically, the creation of a theatrical universe that works only for two.
