Fado at the Ateneu

05/05/2023

The Salão Nobre of Ateneu Comercial do Porto will open its doors to Fado with the initiative “Fado no Ateneu”, starting this month of May. The public will be able to attend musical sessions from Tuesday to Saturday, at 6.30 pm, with the offer of a glass of Port wine. During the month of May, "Fado no Ateneu" welcomes the young fado singer Adriana Paquete as a resident artist. Born in Póvoa de Varzim, she has been singing since she was 12 and, at that age, starred in the show “Annie”, by Filipe La Féria. In March, she released her first album “Meu Coração”, which presents a unique perspective on traditional fado, honoring those with whom she learned – Amália Rodrigues, Beatriz da Conceição, Fernanda Maria and António Rocha. The fado singer will be accompanied by André Teixeira, on the viola, and João Martins on the Portuguese guitar, both with vast musical experience, having already played on multiple stages and alongside prestigious artists. Fado at the Ateneu will continue to happen throughout the year with various artists in a tribute to one of the greatest cultural traditions in Portugal, Fado, in one of the most stunning and historic halls in Portugal. Ateneu Comercial do Porto is an important cultural and social institution in the city. Founded in the 19th century, the institution aims to promote culture and knowledge through its social, cultural and academic activities. With a rich history and tradition, Ateneu Comercial do Porto is a meeting place for artists.

The Municipality of Porto is promoting an experimental project “Comércio Fora do Sítio”. From July 10th to August 5th! This project promotes synergies between commercial establishments, acting as a mechanism to stimulate the local commerce and cooperation between the city’s shop owners. It consists of the creation of unusual pairs, including shops recognised as “Porto de Tradição” and other street and neighbouring shops: Pair 1: Livraria Moreira da Costa and Farmácia Moreno; Pair 2: Santos & Irmãos Lda and Ufalufa; Pair 3. Casa Januário and Olá Breiner; Pair 4: Alcino Silversmith Since 1902 – Workshop Store and Araucana. “ Porto de Tradição” is a local program run by the Municipality of Porto for the classification of “historic store”, to allow the creation of a distinctive identification which establishes the regime of recognition and protection of establishments and entities of historical, cultural or social interest. The result is an itinerary of 8 original and contrasting shop windows, which visitors can view and where they can check-in by reading a QR Code. Station 1 reveals the history of absence, rather than the history of presence. Fragments and further fragments are used to narrate moments that indicate the existence of the current and previous epochs. Materials from different periods coexist with audiovisual devices and different types of image, to show us how PortuCale - the city that gave Portugal its name - became Porto.

Metamorfoses: Imanência Vegetal, Mineral e Animal no Espaço Doméstico Romântico

Until 31/12/2023

4 €

METAMORFOSES focuses on the profusion and the process of integration of the imaginary and the vegetal, mineral and animal themes in a romantic domestic space, bringing to the halls of the house of Quinta da Macieirinha several pieces, some previously exhibited in the former Romantic Museum and other spaces of Museu da Cidade, others never exhibited, showing the unquestionable quality and diversity of the municipal collections. This exhibition also marks the beginning of the evocation of the centenary of the death of Porto artist, Aurélia de Souza, a key moment of the 2022/2023 programme. The celebrated self-portrait of the artist as “Santo António” (Saint Anthony), made around 1902, will be part of the new collection that brings together paintings, furniture, tapestries and textiles, ceramics, crockery and silverware, as well as other surprising sections of the collection, such as sets of fans, cut-out papers and malacology.
