The Caminho Português por Braga (Portuguese Way via Braga) was widely used road in Portuguese territory, until the first quarter of the 14th century, when the Barcelos bridge is built and the Ponte de Lima bridge is renovated, a situation that favours the Caminho Central alternative. The Caminho Português por Braga followed the old Roman Road XVI that connected Lisbon, Santarém, Coimbra, Porto and Braga.

From the Cathedral, go down the steps next to the Old City Hall (Casa da Câmara) and along Rua Escura, Rua do Souto, bearing right into Travessa do Souto and crossing Mouzinho da Silveira street. As you head towards Rua Trindade Coelho, you reach Largo dos Lóios, where there used to be a wicket-gate in the walls, known as the Postigo das Hortas or St.º Elói. From here, you cross Rua dos Clérigos to get to Rua do Almada (street), opened up in 1763 by João de Almada e Melo At the end, having passed by the Chapel of Pestanas (1878), the street opens up into Praça da República. As you cross Rua de João das Regras, appreciate the imposing Church of Lapa (1755). Moving on, passing the Lapa Cemetery (1838), heading towards Rua Antero de Quental, you will see the Chapel if Nossa Senhora do Socorro on your left. Inside, there is a cross that boasts a figure of St. James (1622). Continuing along Rua Antero de Quental and crossing Rua Damião de Góis and Rua da Constituição, bearing slightly to your right, you come to Largo do Campo Lindo followed by Rua de Júlio Ramos. Cross the inner ring road - Via de Cintura Interna - and go down Rua Igreja de Paranhos (founded in the 12th Century). The route carries on along Rua Dr. António Bernardino de Almeida, passing the Hospital de São João, towards Rua da Asprela and on to Águas Santas, in the municipality of Maia.
